Do You "Use" The Knives In Your Collection....

I have 2 jobs. 7:30 - 12:30 I work at a local school district as a delivery driver. I mostly deliver custodial supplies and food to the cafeterias. Second job I cut grass on my own. So yea I use my knives.
I got a crap load of folders and trational knives but they ain't no fancy sit in the safe collection.

I use all my knives. You will find that there are two types of collectors. Ones that mainly collect and maybe use a couple or collectors that use each knife in their collection. The later group tend to sell off or trade knives that do not find their way into the pocket

Mine are all users, I go through phases, of which ones I carry, but they all get used.

Yup, I don't buy a knife unless it's needed.

Kershaw - box opener (retired to GF's edc)
Sebenza - edc (mostly boxes at work)
Misono sujihiki - slicer at work
Yoshihiro Yanagi - fish slicer at work
Kukri sirupati - outdoors

In fact, if I have a knife that sits around I usually polish the crap out of em and give em to friends.

Just gave a kanetsune damascus Yanagi to a buddy and he says it's a 2 foot long razor haha.

I've seen some member pics on here with like 5-20 folders and I ask myself 'why??'.

Someone should start a thread 'does your knife make you money?' haha

Mine all get used. It's hard enough to justify buying them as it is, I don't think I could ever bring myself to buy another if they just sat in boxes or on display. I guess maybe I still could...

All of mine are users, even the "1 of XX" ones. In fact, I've been going through the accumulection to see what I don't use, as I've found myself guilt-carrying some just to use them. Then I realized I needed to clean out a bit.

Almost every knife I own was purchased with the intention of using them. Some are patterns that, after buying it, I decided I didn't really like it after all. Others I just haven't gotten around to yet, or I have found that I already have a "user" that fills the same niche well enough.

There are a few I specifically picked up with the idea of holding onto them a while and selling later for a profit, which may turn out to be a foolish idea but time will tell.

So in general I am a user who just happens to have more knives than I need.

^ This!

Well said Sir, I'm in the same catagory :D

I use all my knives, and will sell ones that can't break into my carry rotation

I use my knives. Not all of them. I have no system. I have some patterns with more than one example. I carry what strikes me at the time I need a pocket knife. I've got a couple that I will probably not use, but I might. The only one that I felt when I bought it that I'll never carry and use is one is the Cattaraugus rosewood handled Eureka Jack by JBF Champlin/GEC.

I have a couple of special edition Case canoes that I may never carry. But, I have dozens of knives and I might carry any of them at any time. And, no, most of my knives don't make me any money as I don't have a job that requires a knife or depends on having a knife. I carry my knives for the occurrences of things that need to be cut or things that need to be opened.

I enjoy carrying and using my knives and I enjoy having knives just for the enjoyment of the knives themselves. I do tend not to have knives that have tools that I don't normally need (e.g., marlin spikes or corkscrews).

Whatever your answer to this question may be, it is right for you and that's all that really matters. Me, I'm addicted to purchasing and owning and using traditional knives. I consider myself an accumulator rather than a collector.

I try to, but after years of gathering knives some get neglected. Some I hold onto because I know they'll see use down the road. Those that I don't feel I will end up using I sell or trade.

Every knife I buy is a continuation of the great exploration. Much as the Platonists sought the perfect form, I seek that "vorpal blade" which will satisfy my every cutting need. You have to carry a knife and cut with it before you really get a feel for how well it functions. Therefore, I have to carry and use every knife I buy on a daily basis to see how close it comes to being "the one".

I won't ever find it. But it gives me an excuse to explore features and shapes and alloys.

i dont personally believe in safe queens for myself. only because my expendable income is not as high as i would like. i usually hover with 4-7 knives of mid tech, nicer productions or less expensive customs. i have had probably 30 knives i have bought or gotten in trades that i fondled and then they sat for a week-months before i sold then in perfect condition but i wouldnt consider them safe queens. i would call them dust collectors ha. i wasnt buying them to put away and save for later. i bought them to use them and they turned out to not be what i needed or wanted. a few examples would be the zt 0560, 0550, 0350, 0200, bm adamas, spyderco navaja, crk zaan just to name a few. all the knives i have sold off have been wonderful and everything i expected but just didnt seem to 100% fit my needs.

even right now i have a rat 1 and a gso 4.1 in 3v which is amazing. but both knives sit, unused brand new because i have been too busy to sell or trade them
