Do You "Use" The Knives In Your Collection....

Basically, I don't have a collection of knives: I own a few knives that I carry and use.
If I ever stumbled into a knife that deserves to be preserved (due to its rarity, or historical value) I would probably just give it to someone who would keep it in a safe. My knives are "normal" knives, and they belong to my pockets :)

I really only carry and use a few (less than 20 I think) knives across my collection regularly but I have used and carried about 40% of my knives. The rest are either duplicates in case I lose one of my users or ones I expect to carry at one point. Or duplicates of what I carry but with different handle materials. There are a few that I will likely never carry but I haven't gotten rid of them.

I buy 'em to use, or else because they're cool (some just aren't practical, like a huge Spanish navaja....). One of my favorite things is carrying around in my pocket a really nice knife, maybe one given by a good friend, or one that has some other association attached to it, and every time I use it I get a little joy out of it.

Today I'm carrying a Gerber Silver Knight with MOP handles. Last time I mentioned it to a collector he advised me to put it in a drawer because I'd "never lose money on it." So there's all kinds in the world of the knife-nut, to be sure. I'd feel a bit funny carrying a gorgeous and perfect knife that somehow managed to survive 40 or so years as NOS, I admit. They're only new once. But fortunately I've got a soft spot for ratty old user knives, and if that preference keeps me at the cheaper end of the scale, I guess I won't complain :)

So all that I've bought, I certainly bought with the intention of using -- there are a few that didn't work out, and really ought to find new homes. I also have a few I was gifted in the collection that get a pass on account of being mementos as much as they are knives. But in the main they get used, even the ones I might "lose money" on.

I have several knives ;) ... and I don´t use them all. But I try to use them as much as they deserve. I´m not really a collector, because I don´t have actually a "topic" for collecting. I don´t collect Case, Buck or whatever. I buy the knives which are attractive for me in some case.

When I see older knives on fleamarket displays or something like this, I think it needs a better home so I try to get it :D

But back to the use - I have some all-time-faves which I carry frequently. Others are not carried that much or "just" on special occasions. And some are just for collecting. When a knife has profen during use it gets used pretty much, mostly for office carry and sometimes on my building lot.

I have more knives than I could ever use. A lot of them were got off ebay, trades, flea markets, etc. I am more of a knife hoarder than collector. I don't have any illusions that my collection is ever going to be worth a lot. I just plain love knives. Most of my EDC are either knives that I have modded, or just ones that I picked up and really liked, so I want to carry them.

I carry every knife in my "accumulation". Now some I dont use too much and for some things because of what they are etc. but I carry and use everything.

I enjoy carrying and using my knives and I enjoy having knives just for the enjoyment of the knives themselves. I do tend not to have knives that have tools that I don't normally need (e.g., marlin spikes or corkscrews).

Whatever your answer to this question may be, it is right for you and that's all that really matters. Me, I'm addicted to purchasing and owning and using traditional knives. I consider myself an accumulator rather than a collector.

Ed, well said and I agree with your above words. Its about how I feel about it also.

I also buy most of my knives with the intent of using them. The remainder are bought to try specific features, shapes, materials, and makers. Knives that don't get used, after a while they're let go...

When I buy a knife I hope to use it, some don't get used because I find I have no use for them :D Or they don't work for me, so, they're kept for selling, giving or bartering. I don't consider myself a collector, more 'custodian' of knives, when I'm dead they'll be dispersed and hopefully others will use them and pass more on. A kind of cutlery cosmic wheel :)

Regards to all.

Timely thread. Just this morning I was thinking "why am I buying all these knives if I'm not going to use them"!
The thing is......I like them because I like gadgets and a knife, for me, falls into this category. The "use" of them is more in the appreciation of the workmanship and the beauty of the handles and blades.
If you're reading this you know exactly what I'm talking about.

I do have my carry knives but most of what I own are "lookers".

Here's one of my favorite "lookers".......

I use each and everyone. Some more than others. Seems like I get stuck in a rut and use the same one for bit though.

I have quite a few blades, so it's hard to use them all, but they are all purchased with the intent of being users. I've never been one to jump on the safe queen bandwagon, not with firearms, fountain pens, watches, etc. They're all tools.

Im with you on that one. I used to get interesting looks wearing a Rolex Datejust while fishing and camping. I do have some guns I dont like to use a lot like my P08 and P38 but I do shoot them. As for my knives, I twinge a little when a new exclusive knive first touches the sharpening stones, same with an old pristine knive but I get over it.

Whew - well I don't know if I slot into anyones category, I have my knives stored in plastic boxes, and hidden, I can only imagine a young burglar seeing my knives on display - the outcome would shatter me and I probably wouldn't be able to replace them.
I use right now as a EDC rotation say...8 to 10 knives at a time some of them more than others, my other knives I like to keep as mint as possible, although there are a lot of beautiful older knives I own that most certainly are not mint-but I would have a very hard time finding better ones - so as of yet in this stage of my life I don't use them either - although I do find myself lately appreciating life to its fullest, and thinking that my treasure would be even more treasured if used carefully.
At times, I find it a wee bit frustrating as these knives need maintenance, and I cant get enough of them, yet I keep buying more and more.
my latest purchase is a Stag Patch knife-that's going to be my garden knife, also some nice Kitchen knives to appreciate them instead of using horrible "ordinary" knives in the kitchen - I want to up the anti a bit in the Kitchen lol.
Eveyone to their own I guess :)

I carry and use most of my knives, except for a few old knives that I may not be able to replace and a couple of custom knives that are kinda special. I use some of them harder than others, some are carried when working outside or doing more cutting, some are used when I have meetings with customers or going out for the night. It just depends on what I'm doing which knife I carry.
