Do You Vacation with Chris Reeve Knives

Just curious. Do you take Chris Reeve knives with you on cruise vacations or vacations involving commercial airlines? I've done it once or twice, but the thought of losing one my CR knives: a Redwood Inlaid Large Sebenza, Decorated Sebenza or my Umfaans to luggage thieves or having them confiscated by a cruise line is too much to bear. I usually take a serviceable but inelegent A.G. Russell knife or Leatherman on those vacations.

I have no problems taking my CR knives on a driving vacation because I keep possession of my knives at all times, and I can keep them in my hotel room safe.

It's a shame I won't take my CR's with me on a cruise ship or to a trip to the Far East. How do the rest of you guys feel about it?

i just ordered a Kabar Dozier for this very reason

also a Victorinox Climber

i figure if those come up missing i'll be kinda pissed, but it's not like losing my Sebenza or Charge Ti

I'm just returning from a RC Alaska cruise. Took a sebenza and an mnandi. Not a problem on Royal Carribean to be carrying. As far as airlines, I've had my sebenza in Tokyo, Beijing, Paris, and most other places where I check luggage. I alway remove the blade, put it in the checked luggage, and carry the empty frames with me . . .

Checking the blade and carrying the handles is a great idea. I'm going to do that in the future when I travel with any checcked in baggage. When I travel withouth checked in baggage, I buy a nice SAK when I get there and mail it back to myself when I leave.

I do that as well.
I usually take one or two of my fixed blade knives as well, either my single guard Shadow IV or my Green Beret.
Luckily though, most of my travelling is done by auto.

I check-in CRK's, no problem. Ever. And I fly a lot... always with at least Sebenza.

Hi Adam,

I believe they are talking about an inexpensive Swiss Army Knife (SAK) so if it gets taken or lost .....will be easer to sleep ;)

I'd be very surprised if TSA would let you on with some Ti chunks.

I've never had any problems taking the Ti slabs through security -- I always put them in the tray in full view, and they always get the once over with no concerns voiced.

Flying to New York tomorrow and then on to London. I was glad to find a thread covering this.

In the past, when I've flown, I've usually done so with a knife I don't really care about. I usually just bury it deep in the checked-in luggage and this always seems to be fine. Of course though, I'm paranoid about doing this with my small Insingo as I'd be pretty darn upset if it "disappeared."

I suppose I will try my luck but I don't know if I want to bring it to the UK as I'd be wary of customs confiscating it.

Any advice?

I usually travel with Spydies for this reason since they are cheaper in case they are stolen. However, my method should work with all knives. Take a few zipties and zip them to the frame of your luggage. This way even if someone finds them, they are not likely to find something to cut the ties off. Thieves that steal things from luggage are looking for things they can probably hide in their pockets while "searching" bags.

Hope this helps!

I don't take my BG42s because they might be a little hard to replace but what I do is take a Mnandi and usually a Small Sebenza rolled up in socks in my suitcase.

Thanks for the response!

So essentially you're zip tying your knife to the frame?

Thanks for the input!

I traveled to London last year. Knife laws have gotten really strict there, and after doing some research, I opted to leave the Sebenza behind, and just travel with a SAK.

Safe travels!
