Do You Vacation with Chris Reeve Knives

Thanks for the response!

So essentially you're zip tying your knife to the frame?

Thanks for the input!

You got it. Make sure it is to the frame on the inside and there isn't a way to slide it off. It might help if you use several zipties. Ziptie the knife shut, and then slide another ziptie however you can fit it onto the frame. If you want, you can go over kill and use several to attach to the frame. Just make sure you have a good pair of nail clippers in there too so you can snip those ties off when you get to your destination!

I traveled to London last year. Knife laws have gotten really strict there, and after doing some research, I opted to leave the Sebenza behind, and just travel with a SAK.

Safe travels!

Copy that and thanks very much, gents.

I will let you know how it goes.

i just ordered a Kabar Dozier for this very reason

also a Victorinox Climber

i figure if those come up missing i'll be kinda pissed, but it's not like losing my Sebenza or Charge Ti

wow, this is an old thread...

i've since given away that Kabar Dozier and just check my Sebenza without issues. but i don't fly all that often, probably 6 times since that post, and all domestic

Would love to hear from Neil Ashton, or some other UK resident, on the current London knife laws. Neil, ya out there? :)

Or... get a spyderco uk penknife ;).

Thanks for these tips on flying btw with knives! I would have never thought of splitting the blade from the handles :)

This was an interesting read. I'm actually leaving for vacation in 2 days. I actually was talking to Anne at Blade the other day about this. She got a good laugh when I told her that my EDC sebbie was in need of a "spa treatment" but would have to wait until I got back from vacation. I've travelled all over and always take my Sebbie. I do remember reading a story on another forum about a person that had his Small Sebenza taken by TSA as he forgot it was in his bag. If memory serves me right he was flying out of South Africa back to the States and had forgotten that he had it in his bag. He was pushing the limit on time so he couldn't go to a mail center to mail it out. He was P'd to the highest level about loosing it. He learned to always check his carry on bag from then on.

I put my knife inside something else in my luggage. i travel for work with several tool kits and if my knife doesn't find it's way into a tool kit i will put it in the pocket of one of the pairs of pants in my luggage.

Yep, here Dave!

English knife law is quite simple. You can carry any non locking folding knife so long as the cutting edge is 3" or under. Be aware though that The police inturpret that to be 3" blade length. Knife carry is forbiden in sensitive areas such as airports, schools and some government buildings.

Be careful in London as many tourist areas have their own rules forbiding knife carry and many now have metal detectors as part of the fight against terrorism. Which means is you'll have to leave it at the entrance with security and collect when you leave.

Regarding Cruises, i've never had any problem with carrying a knife.

Hope you have a good trip!

Neil

My daughter has several humorous photos of me in London, burying and retrieving my SAK in the grounds outside the entrance of several popular attractions . . .

I took a cruise on a Princess boat to Alaska. I took my large sebbie, and went off on an excursion. Upon return to the boat they had metal detectors. Man was I pissed - they found the Sebbie, confiscated it, and returned it at the end of the cruise. Fortunately I had the small Sebbie too, and so was not naked for the rest of the cruise.
Advice - find out if your cuise line has metal detectors - if so, leave your carry on board during excursions.

But I take a carry knife with me all the time. If I feel that that there is a probability of losing it on the trip then I take a knife of lesser value, usually a Spydie Manix.

My family and I also did a Princess Cruise Lines Alaska cruise, in and out of Seattle in 2006. I had a lot of fun testing the metal detectors with every shore excursion. I started going through with a quarter in my pocket, and finally worked up to an Ulu knife and $20 worth of quarters . After I had confirmed that the metal detectors were either broken or set to a very high tolerance, I felt comfortable carrying my Sebenza through the detector w/ no concerns. :)
