Do you / would you BOB an XM?

Hello all,

In the present day thinking of "prepared" is much superior to the alternative, many plan Bail / Bug Out Bags.

There is a huge variety in size and thinking that goes into these. Much like multiple tool boxes for specific tasks.

I often say that if you are a camper, then you likely already have a well equipped BOB in the form of your primary pack. If you're a day hiker, you're likely off to a nice start, etc.

I EDC XMs and now have more than two. So, in not wanting too many to clutter a safe I'm leaning toward adding them where they might come in handy. I have a similar philosophy with flashlights.

So, in addition to fixed blades, multitools and SAKs, is the primary BOB a good place to keep an XM?

I'm leaning toward, yes. What say you?

My thoughts are that dispersed storage is good to prevent theft of everything, but leads to misplacing lots of things. However, dispersed storage leads to "where is my 1/4-20 tap set" that I know I bought and put in one of my garage kits. There is no right answer, however, I find that the "kit" storage method leads to much clutter and never really knowing where "the" flashlight is. For me, the key is parts consistency, so that although I may have two or three of something, all the support stuff (chargers, accessories, etc) are interchangeable. I'm not sure I'd put an XM in a BOB as it would likely get dumped out into a box or tub by my kids when they needed a little bit bigger bag.

I'm speaking of a well organized and equally well equipped dedicated BOB. Not in reach of children and not scattered about in multiple locations.

Ok. Lots of views and no opinions or thoughts.

I'm not a preper / prepper, I live very near a fault line, get all kinds of extreme weather, and so on. So, being the responsible type, I plan things that can be planned.

Only reason I started this thread was to hear if anyone else planned a folder into their BOB.

I believe that even if I have a XM in my pocket, that I may need to equip another in my party with a quality tool. Or disaster might strike in the middle of the night.

So an XM in a go bag means another opportunity for an XM on me when I need it most.

Ok...I admit that we have a couple BOB's at home, and separate GHB's (Get Home Bag) in each of the cars. That said, each of the bags has either a Busse or Chris Reeve fixed blade knife as part of the gear. The wife and I always have a folder on us when we are up and about also. But if I were to add a folder to the bags, it would probably be along the lines of a ZT 550, 560, or 561. Too easy to lose, or maybe have to leave a bag to risk my Hinderers. Just IMHO.

Busse or kin in the bag...check.

For security reasons I don't keep much gear in a vehicle. That said, if I'm in a vehicle (away from home), there's something in tow.
A really minimalist satchel comes along when I travel to an airport (where I'm going to be parking for the duration of my travel). It contains things to cover basic roadside concerns.

I guess I custom tailor bags to the occasion and foreseen / predictable.

I can see a ZT in any of these.

Seems that I have kind of answered my own questions. Do as I do, pack the gear I feel is right for whichever concern.

A primary BOB is a catastrophe bag. It's the "everything that made my world comfortable is no more, now what I'm I going to do" gear.

Please understand I'm not talking Mayan calendar, I'm speaking to disaster preparedness and personal responsibility.

As important a knife is in the kit, so is medical gear and tools / plans to cope with possible concerns.

There is no way I'd rely on a folding knife in any type of 'bob' situation. I much prefer fixed blades for that role. Of course, if I had to choose a folder, I am sure an XM would be one of the best choices. (Of course, I need to obtain one first =)

I see it this way, I carry my XM every day. I don't need redundancy in my BOB. I pack my BOB to be the essentials that I need that I don't carry with me constantly. So no, I wouldn't put an XM in my BOB. I would just have it on me. My BOB only has fixed blades in it.

You guys did not read my entire first post or are not understanding my question.

I said in addition to fixed blades, multitools and SAKs, etc.

And I'm talking about a go bag. Say in the middle of the night. Grab it (and it only) and go!

The XM would go into the pocket of whatever clothes available and be your primary folder.

This thread is a dud, it boils down to personal preference.

Thanks to all who commented.

I guess this comment is late, but it sounds like you are used to the knife, and you may have it in the pocket of the pants that you leave beside the bed (lol, personal moment). I'm not sure what to say other than it sounds like you have experience with them.

I still remember asking my father if he knew the value of a $20 bill when I was about 20yrs. old. We used to pal around back then, and he actually (later on) gave me a spyderco delica that I took with me to the army.

Maybe look for a ffg (cut like kitchen knives) that has a trainer available, like the Delica or Endura.

The years of use that I got out of that Delica was worth more than the original price point.

if I had an XM it would be a safe queen, but if you got "the bux" what the hek! there like pop tarts. lol, send me one if you get a chance.

I read the post, but in a 'bob' type situation, I wouldn't put a folder in it. That's why I said what I said. A folding knife isn't suited for that situation, at least in my opinion. If you meant as an EDC to have when you grab the bob, and not actually in it, then sure, it'd be suitable. :)

Right, I get that. But my XM is sitting with my keys so if I'm running, Im grabbing my keys and knife and hitting the road.

Cool. But in my thinking it's not an end of the world, it's just your immediate local is FUBAR or unsustainable.

So, since life outside your immediate area is still functional, the folder is just like a common-day EDC.

I guess one could place their EDC into a "go bag" at night. That way it's the same knife you know and love with you if and when you grab the bag and go.

Thanks again to all posting here. But it does really seem to be personal preference of both gear and storage.

I guess I just don't want my production XMs to be locked away where they can do me no good when I need them most.

Then sir, they are a just a knife to you. I don't think the local law-enforcement, would take it from you, as we are law abiding. You have just reached the point of replace-ability, its cool though. I only swim at the gym in laps with goggles on... oops
