Do your knives disappear when you carry them?

I thought that might get your attention. :)

Here's what I want to know. Does it ever get to the point when you're carrying a knife (particularly a folder) that you completely forget that you've got it on you? Or does the fact that you're carrying always remain in your consciousness at some level? And if it does stick in your mind, does that ever bother you?

So I'll kick it off.

I work in an office and I carry lightweight folders (typically three ounces or less) deep in my left front pocket. Nothing goes into that pocket besides my EDC and I never use pocket clips. By doing that, once I drop my knife in my pocket, I quickly forget it's there. I don't concern myself that my knife might get banged up by something in my pocket like my keys or loose change. (I keep those items in my right front pocket.) I also never worry that my knife might come unclipped and fall out of my pocket or that prying eyes might spot the clip and complain to HR that I'm carrying a "weapon". That works well for me because some of my folders are expensive and I don't like having to invest a lot of mental energy thinking about them all the time.

So how about you?

I carry clipped front right, mostly, and I forget it's there, until I need it for something. Mostly I carry one of these (slightly dated shot, but imagine a few more Southards and you get the idea):

Outside of the thick and heavy 0801, which is my current yard beater knife, the rest are all thin/small/light enough to go unnoticed in my pocket, usually. They're all production knives, and users, so I don't have to worry about the world ending if something happens to them. That said, I'm looking to add some new customs to the lineup and I'm not sure that will change my behavior much.

I do nto think about it that much. It is just something I have like a wallet and driver's license.

Yep. After awhile I pay about as much attention to the fact that I'm carrying a knife as I do the fact that I'm carrying car keys. And I definitely like it that way. :)

Show off! ;) :D

Those are some mighty fine production knives you've got there, Greg. And with some of the aftermarket scales you've installed, several of them are inching up toward custom knife prices. The world might not end if I lost one of them. But I'd be real unhappy camper for awhile if I did.

Preface:

I work in retail management, in a large, warehouse style store. My job is a very mixed bag of work, and some days involve a lot of breaking down cardboard shippers, plastic packaging, zip tie cutting (usually 20 or so at a time), etc. I can have a day where I use my knife 1-2 times, or a day where I have it in hand for a few hours.

I wear 5.11 Stryke pants (their less tactical looking cargos) in black to work. That gives me slash pockets on the upper/front area, and my folder rides in the right side slash pocket. Since I got it, I have been carrying my ZT 0566. With the black deep pocket clip and slim profile, it would be completely invisible in my pocket... if I didn't tie on a rescue orange cobra knot lanyard to it. Still, nobody else seems to know what that bright orange lanyard is tied to.

I use my knife too often to forget it's there.

I envy you that! Working in an office has its advantages, but needing to use a decent-sized folder several times a day isn't among them.

Oh, no doubt. I'd be torn up if I lost one of my favorites. Luckily (pauses to knock on wood here) I haven't lost a knife in a while. I was just saying it would be different if it was something ludicrously expensive or difficult to replace. If I ever managed to get my hands on a Southard custom and then somehow lost it I'd probably need to be prescribed antidepressants . . .

For sure. That's part of the reason I don't use pocket clips. I simply don't trust them. And I don't like to advertise that I'm carrying either. What's in my pocket is nobody's business but mine.

This much is know for a fact. If I kept a knife clipped to my pocket, I'd constantly be fiddling with it to make sure it hadn't fallen out. And that's not something I want to have on my mind day in and day out. Fortunately, I've never lost a knife I kept deep in my pocket. I don't tend to spend much time upside down and gravity hasn't failed me yet. :)

We've got a 'jeans' marathong going on now, which is great! Thus, I'm leaving a blacked out OHO clipped on the RFP because it blends. Otherwise, I would be letting that one sit down in the pocket, also. I don't notice my knives, as none are that big nor heavy.

My knives never really get to disappear from my pocket. Ever since I lost my first knife a few years ago, I've gotten into this obsessive habit of checking my pocket for a clip every time I leave anywhere or get in and out of my car. It doesn't bother me anymore, since its literally just a habit now.
Pretty sure some people think I have a neural issue though :D

That's EXACTLY what I'd be doing, and I've never lost a knife (knock on wood!). I've got enough quirks and ticks already. I don't need any new ones to my collection.

I always have a knife clipped in my front right pocket and have never lost one. Over the years it's just become a part of me and I don't "think" about it but I know it's there and if for some reason it's not there like I'm flying I feel off.

I coach high school lacrosse and i always have a knife on me on gameday because for one reason or another a kid needs a string or tape or something cut. One day after a game i realized my spyderco ppt wasnt in my pocket. I was pretty upset becuse i had come to really like that knife. I looked all over and couldnt find it anywhere. :(

When I was younger, I was that way...
Then I lost many knives, as well as my house keys (which also had the keys to the gun cabinet...had to pry that thing open...)

So now, my knives are clipped, and I know they are there.
And my keys are on a nice heavy chunk of brass that goes "Bonk!!!" if it falls.

No more lost knives or keys for me. :)

Total opposite here: I've found my SAKs lying on the ground under my chair, and have several times heard them falling out. Never lost one. But, this is only when I'm in ODUs at work. Never with jeans.

Never lost a clipped knife.

The last time I lost a knife it was a little old timer stockman. I bought a kershaw skyline after that and fell in love with pocket clips. About 50 knives later, I haven't lost a single one. 98% of the time I carry a zdp-189 endura and it stays securely clipped in my pocket. Or I have a buck 110 on my belt. It's the little traditional knives I worry about losing but so far no issues with clipped ones. :)

I also work in an office, and usually carry my 710 clipped to the right front pocket of my slacks. I often have to shred documents and I don't feel like walking to the shredder.

My most carried knife is a Victorinox Alox Cadet. It is very thin and light, and rides in the bottom of my right hand pocket, or watch pocket if I am wearing jeans.

I often forget it to the point where I forget to remove it at the end of the day and have to fish it out of the laundry hamper the next day when getting ready for work. It has also gone through the wash a few times that way.

So yeah, after a while it's like anything else you always carry with you. It's just there in your pocket for when you need it.
