Do your spydercos have a theme?

Is there a rhyme or reason to your collection or do you just buy what ever catches your eye?

I started out wanting all the golden models and I still do but I've decided to work on all the steels spyderco offers and it keeps me busy trying to decide which model to get ZDP and which to get VG10 etc..

Some things I can see people building the collection around is..

-country of origin
-sprints
-Handle material
-blade steel
-lock style
-model
-color
-blade shape

So how do you decide your next spyderco? (Just cause is an acceptable answer :)

Simple, eventually I'll have owned all that are available to me. Some stick in my collection most don't. Just a matter of personal taste.

I'm sure ill run into some that don't really tickle my fancy and have to find a different model with that steel to try

There are so many models and for some reason (OCD maybe?) I need a.. Not sure the word I'm looking for but a reason to buy the next one

Mostly just because it turns me on, but the thought that's constantly crossing my mind when deciding to purchase - will this excel in my left hand?

i really like spydercos that were designed for self defense.

chinook, civilian, matriarch, massad ayoob, laci szabo folder, yojimbo, police etc....

+1 for the self defence blades. I have most of them (started with the p'kal). I began edc-ing with a native 3 though. Now there is no rhyme or reason to it :)

Is chaos a theme? The only real rule is that they all have to be different. I don't like redundancy in my collection. So far, no two knives are of the same steel or even same handle color.

I mainly go for the leaf shape slicers, but there is the oddball tuff too. I just had to have that one.and the Breeden rescue.

The ones I find a use for. I won't buy one if I can't come up with a legitimate need for it. Of course, "legitimate" is totally subjective as I can convince myself I need a special and unique knife for just about any mundane task that could be accomplished with any given folder. :)

I guess my point is that I won't buy a knife that I know won't get carried or used just because it looks sexy or is a pretty color. Those are totally legitimate reasons, they just don't work for me.

Useability. I have a small slipit that is carryable and legal nearly everywhere, a native for normal stuff, and a Chokwe for a bigger carry. I also have some others.

Whether with Spyderco or other brands no two knives can be similar, with one exception currently. With Spyderco I have dfly zdp, schempp rock, Manix 2 xhp, Gayle bradley and Nilakka. All very different knives.

This is my philosophy as well, preferable no two in the same steel either but with how common S30V is anymore that's not possible. What's your exception?

Benchmade grip and minigrip. However, they are in two different steels. I have mixed feelings about s30v, and try to go with something else. I'm really loving my Manix2 in xhp. It has kicked everything out of my pocket for the time being. Even my strider.

My theme would be no theme. I like trying different steels, locks, designs etc. I have only two of one knife simply because it got discontinued and I found a second for cheap. I do have quite a bit of S30V and VG-10, but it is mainly due to simply wanting a particular knife no matter the steel. I do like collaborations quite a bit, some of the ethnics really pique my interest while others do nothing for me. Right now, I am deciding which Manix I should grab next. The main reason I want a Manix is I don't have one, or a knife with the ball lock. I do have a Tusk and that ball lock is pushing me to try out a knife with the ball lock. I would like to grab a Manix not in S30V due to having a lot of it already. Maybe the next CPM-154/CPM-S90V will be a Manix. I also prefer to buy brand new, no second hand unless it is a long discontinued knife I have to have.
