I've recently been infatuated with the 'doctor's knife' style folder. I really dig the overall slim profile and thin blades! Can anyone out there recommend a classy-looking folder in this style?

Photos would be awesome too! :o

Thanks all!

You could try a Rough Rider Drs knife for under $10.00. Great knives, maybe a dozen different handle materials and they come in 1 and 2 blades. There's a big thread on Rough Rider knives sitting on the first page with pictures.

Take a look here. Beware, it can get expensive.

Yes, that goat herding Bastid sure has some beautiful knives! Such a lucky fella; absolutely stunning pieces! I particularly liked the Art Washborn Mokeme, the Mike Alsdorf stag, and tied for first-place: Richard Rogers' Tortoise and Gene Shadley's Black Lip.:cool::thumbup:

Now, genuine tortoise scales with damascus steel would sure be a sight!

*ahem* maybe I'd better take another look at those $10 Rough Rider's...:o

Mike Alsdorf makes a very fine custom Doctor pattern, very reasonable in price considering the quality of his work.

I agree. Mike made be a doctors pattern about a year ago with a CPM 154 blade and mammoth ivory scales. The quality is incredible.

I visited Mike Alsdorf's website and admired several examples of his work. Wow! Unfortunately for me, the site is clear, in bold red text, that he is not interested in international sales or shipping... :(

W.R. Case seems to have a nice selection of knives in the doctor's pattern. Now if I can just find a decent dealer here in Canada or one that ships hassle-free...

We shall continue the research! :)

Brett, I'm not sure where you are in Canada, but I know there are a lot of Canadians and Europeans on the forum with US post office boxes or friends in the US who they can get mail from.

Mike is a great guy to deal with, you have nothing to lose by sending him an email or giving him a call.

Many thanks, my friend! I have sent Mr. Alsdorf a message through his website asking if he would consider a custom creation for me. Such beautiful blades!

Brett

He sometimes takes a day or two to respond to email, if you don't hear from him there's a phone number on his website.

I won't hassle the poor fella or take him away from working on some *other* lucky rodder's knife... :D I reckon he'll respond in due time.

By the way, your mammoth ivory custom is absolutely amazing. I'm very jealous... :)

Thanks again for the shove; nothing ventured, nothing gained!

I'm ashamed to say it, but it's been a few months and I've still not gotten around to picking up a doctor's knife. I've been looking though, and I'm leaning towards the Case brand. I'm torn between picking up a few different Baby Doc's with the spatula blade or a full-sized stag handle with raindrop damascus (a real beaut!) Whichever I end up with, it'll be carried loose in the right front pocket with my keys and other items. It's bound to get scratched (unless I opt for some kind of pouch for it--not overly keen on the pouch idea.) Maybe the damascus is too nice for that kind of carry...

Any opinions?

Thanks!

Brett

The little baby docs are kinda cool and useful. I have given a few away to friends and they are constantly commenting how they enjoy carrying and using them.

I was hoping that you'd post pictures of some of your doctor's knives. You (or possibly Dr. Bill) have the best collection of them that I've seen.

You da man, Gus! Thanks again for the kind offer to be the middle-man so I can order up an Alsdorf custom! Much obliged!

Glad to know I'm not the only one. Not sure what it is about them. There seem so many more practical choices, but there's just something about them.

Here's one that has stuck in my head since I first saw the pic in this thread:

Actually Dr. Bill has the nicest collection I have seen, but thank you for the complements which really should go to the makers. ;)

Here are some antique and modern production Dr. knives. Lot of different takes on the pattern are represented. Note the Utica Serpentine in pearl (middle column second from top.)
