Dodo alternatives?

Looks like I'm going to be waiting awhile for the S30V Spec Bump, which I had reserved quite a bit of money for...

I really like the dodo as a concept, but in reality, I think it's hideous. I might just have to deal with it, but are there any good alternatives? G10, full sized handle, small blade...etc....I do like the alternative locks...

Have you actually held the Dodo in your hand? Once you do, it becomes clear that there are no alternatives. :)

Well, it's a Spyderco, so I assume it has top notch ergo, but it's still hideous. My only real complaint is the styling....so I just need to see if there are other things to glance at...I do like the combo of the ball bearing lock in this though....in other knives I'd be stuck with something more mundane. Also, it looks too wide when closed.

It is absolutely one of those knives that has to be handled/used to appreciate. If you are in the market for a hawkbill, there is none better in this size class IMHO.

The dodo isn't really what I think of as a hawkbill, personally, but I digress--I'm not really looking for a particular blade shape. I'm just looking for a full sized g10 handle combined with a smaller, more people friendly blade. If it comes with a cool locking mechanism, all the better. Alternative handle materials are acceptable also.

Oh, I like the Crow a lot, but still, not quite what I'm looking for. Think Airkat tripwire in super mini form

It probably doesn't exist....I'm thinking about trying to make one myself with the help of a knifemaker I know

If I did buy a dodo, should I get serrated or straight edge? opinions.

I've been looking at the Yojimbo also.

3-inch blade, full size handle. Mmmmm.

I have found the Dodo to be very useful (for a mini bladed knife).

However, sharpening it can be challenging at times, even with my preferred 701 Spyderco Profile stones.

Not too sure of the lock, but then the ball lock surprised me.

How about the Yojimbo?

THAT is a hideous knife.

How about looking on ebay or the like for an old Endura or Delica that's seen better days and cut the blade down? You could start maybe 1/4 inch past the opening hole and cut down at around 50º. That would give you about an inch and a half of good, straight cutting edge in a full size handle (on an Endura, less on a Delica of course). The tip would still be closed inside the handle.

May be hard to do, but it wouldn't look half bad (certainly no worse than the Dodo).

Yep, beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder. I'm a big Spyderco fan but the Yohimbo, in my eyes, is the second ugliest knife I've ever seen.(right behind the new Benchmade Ruckus on the butt ugliest list) On the other hand, from the very first time I saw the Dodo I thought it was just a really cool looking knife... Then again I have always liked the wacky looks of the Spyderco Toad... There really is no accounting for taste. :D

Para Military. Never ever thought I would like it till I got a Military. Then another, and then the para. THE EDC KNIFE TO HAVE. Everyone should own the para and CQC7b me thinks. Oh yea try finding a BM 812 with the round hole and in ATS34. Great lite little knife but nothing in my book compares to the para military. Small knife cuts much larger than its size would indicate, first rate grip ergos' too. The handle is something to hold. It is not to big and not to small. It is lite wt in the hand has a great sound when opening and closing and a fool proof lock. keepem sharp

Well, the new Spec Bump doesn't come out for a month, so I'm waiting on that one.

I'm also a big fan of the Para...I guess the para is what started me on my new quest. I have one also.

I personally think the Rukus is a beautiful, beautiful knife. So yeah, beauty is very subjective....but I need something that I, personally, find attractive.

Like others have said, you really need to handle a Dodo if you haven't. When I first saw it, I thought it was insanely hideous. I got to play with one in a store and it completely changed my view of it. Just look at my avatar...:D

I would probably go for the PE version (or just get both). It's not that hard to sharpen using the corners of the stones in the Sharpmaker. Good luck with your search. I'd like to find some more sturdy small blade/big handle knives myself.

Unfortunately, handling either is impossible....no knife stores in fort worth or waco carry them....which is interesting, because fort worth has some pretty substantial knife stores.

I often carry both my Para AND My Dodo! (And then of course I carry my SAK Tinker and my Leatheman Wave)... oh never mind.

Bottom line: Dodo is a truly GREAT knife; none better if you like hawkbill blades!

My girlfriend has the SE Dodo in blue G10. It works great for opening boxes, packages, etc.

Yes, it truly is fugly, but, once you hold it, everything falls into place.

If you use it for work, you may never want to use a box cutter again. Sharpening the serrated edges is a snap if you use the Sharpmaker--just use the corners of the sharpeners. If you get the PE version, it's even easier to do so.
