Dodo as a User Knife?

Hi... I've lurked for a bit, great forum, very informative with great members....

Anyway, I have a dilemma... But first a little background. I was a small pocket knife guy, various Case and Bucks when, on a whim I picked up a fully serrated, stainless steel handled Endura and was sold on Spyderco. Since that first Endura, I've bought a Sage 1, a Delica 4 and traded for a Manix 2 and another Delica 4 with a forum member. I've also bought a few knives from another maker that are very nice, but to me, Spyderco is king.

During this time, my grail was a Spyderco Dodo Orange Sprint Run. After lurking a while, I found one for sale that was like new and pounced on it. I've got to say, I love the Dodo. It fits my hand great and the blade is simply stunning to look at. I bought it as a user but with the short blade, I'm having a hard time finding uses for it and am thinking about putting it up for trade. I dont want to simply look at it yet never use it.

What I can't figure out is to keep it or try to trade it. My next grail is a PM2 with digi scales and the black blade and for the life of me I can't come up with a decision. So, do I trade it, keep it?

Thoughts, suggestions, regrets, ideas? All are welcomed....

Well I'd say the para is a much better user IMO, partially due to the better more veratile blade shape. Both have g10 handles and S30V stainless steel blades so you're not losing any ergonomics or performance, just a different shape and honestly a slightly more functional blade. I miss my Para2 and think it was one of the best lightweight, high quality user knives around.

I honestly think that a PM2 is superior when it comes to edc tasks. Longer and more practical blade profile.
I don't know about you, but the thought of self sharpening a DoDo sounds like a nightmare.

I would keep a dodo for personal collection and perhaps later gain, but not for a user.

I prefer a plain edge with a subtle drop/spear point for edc tasks.

I agree. I used to have a PE Cricket and trying to sharpen that little thing was a real pain. I know there's a lot of love for s-curved blades but I'm just not one of them.

I'd recommend trading or selling the Dodo to get a Para 2. But be aware that the Dodo you have is valuable. You should be able to get good money for it or trade it for a Para 2 sprint (ie. CTS XHP).

This thread is more or less the exact reason I have yet to snag an Orange dodo. I love the look of the knife, but the difficulty to sharpen and questionable viability as an EDC have not made it a high knife on my to buy list. I tend to use all my knives, some more than others, but I try not to buy anything to sit in a drawer. I don't know that I would trade it for a PM2 in your shoes, maybe hang onto it and get the PM2 when you have the cash...

Without of doubt Dodo is a special tool, which will excels at certain tasks like open clam-packs, shredding cardboard boxes and most likely will not perform well at cutting your sub. If you can have only one EDC and do not care about collection, probably Dodo is not for you. But probably you will praise Dodo, if you will have it as your second knife. Also I think that Dodo has a killer appearance. I fall in love with it at first sight in 2005. My Dodos are not going anywhere. Not fan to sharpen, true, but Spyderco can help, if needed.

Thanks for the replies so far guys. I can't find a use for it, don't want to just have it as part of my collection but I'll be damned if I can talk myself into letting it go.

I have several in both SE and PE. I carried the PE as a second knife to be a box and cigar cutter until they discontinued production and prices when through the roof. I love the little knives but they are now retired to my collection out of fear of losing or damaging one. I do keep a plain edge Dodo near my humidor with the other standard cutters. That re-curve blade is just right. Now if you smoke cigars, then you could use it to de-cap a cigar head (or open pretty much any type container). You didn't state in your post whether the sprint Dodo was SE or PE; I find the PE has a bit more versatility... If it was me, I'd keep it for a while. Heck, use it as a letter opener at your desk. If you decide on a trade, let me know!

I use my Dodo almost daily for opening boxes, packing, cutting cardboard and stuff. It works well with pulling-type cuts.

My take on it would be that if you don't ever see yourself using it, sell it and save the cash for something else that you may want later.

Zeus, it is a plain edge. I can see where it would be a great cigar cutter although I'm more of a pipe man these days.

If I decide to trade it, and I'm starting to lean that way, I'll let you know.

I understand you completely. I am selling some of my knives, when I need funds, but I couldn't sell my NIB black Dodo, when they were hitting $300++ marks. I even didn't think about doing so. And now, when they dropped to less than half, I do not regret that I didn't sell back than. Dodo is the knife, which has some mystery and attraction. Orange and CF Dodos certainly brightened-up my 2012.

as i've posted in just about all my posts so far, i'm new to knife collecting. and until i saw this thread, i was unfamiliar with the dodo. i just looked it up and i must say it is one odd looking knife. my tastes have changed dramatically over the past few weeks and i'm now interested in blades i never thought i would be. i dont know if i'd ever have a use for a blade like one. but the pm2 is my absolute favorite edc...cannot leave the house without it. i don't think anyone would be disappointed in trading for one. at least i haven't heard of any complaints yet!

I've got around 100 Estate pipes. Any style or maker you prefer?

Zeus, I don't have any thing exotic. Just a couple of bent Savinelli's.

I do love a good English tobacco. I always tell everyone that a good English tobacco in a pipe is the best cigar they have ever had.

I love the DODO. I can sharpen anything on my spyderco sharpmaker. I'd use the H#$ out of it. PM2 will always be around, the DODO will be extinct again. I picked up a yojimba 2 over the PM2. I "get" the PM2 is more functional. I have decided that I purchased it for some reason, so I will give it a try in my EDC. The PM2 isn't going anywhere soon. When my local shop has one, I'll get the DODO. I think it would be a great SD knife. EDC, I would gamble it will cut like a raped ape and be a favorite. Best wishes.

I have owed at least 4 of the Dodo model over the years. I still use my Blue PE model on occasion and it works great as an EDC. The "Reverse S" blade design seems to work especially good in Spyderedge but both edge variants are great all purpose EDC folders.

The G-10 handle and the ball bearing lock really go good together. Also I've been amazed at how well the handle fits such a wide range of hand sizes.

My biggest wish on the Dodo with these newer Sprint runs is that I want them to make the Dodo available again in Spyderedge and to make it available in another blade steel like S90V or M-4.

I've nicked myself so many times with my orange Dodo that I don't carry it much anymore. I sank the tip about a quarter inch into my thumb after I first got it - and the tip is so acute that I didn't even know I'd been stabbed until I notice the blood. My 11-year old son (a Boy Scout) found it and asked if he could carry it - but I wouldn't let him due to the safety concerns.

It is a great blade with superb ergonomics - but is scares the beejesus out of me.

This thread has inspired me. I think I'll carry my blue PE Dodo with me for a couple of days. I haven't EDCed it in quite a while.

Ted is right about the point being potentially dangerous because when that point is sharp it is like the apex of a needle to say the least. I truly wish they would do a Sprint of the Dodo model in some other steel other than S30V. It's one of the very few S30V Spyders I've kept to use.

There are very few trades I've regretted over the years but my full SE Dodo was one that I would really love to get back someday. For as unusual as the design of the Dodo it is a very good EDC. You just have to carry and use one to see what I'm talking about.

I liked the Dodo handle style so much that I copied the design using some aluminum stock and stuck a modified CS Tuff Lite blade inside. Now I have a FrankenDodo beater box-cutter with a Wharncliffe blade.
