Dodo found severely wounded

Just thought I'd share a recent tragedy.

Last Sunday I pulled my beloved dodo, which I've carried for a few years, from my back pocket. Alas, the wire clip, my favorite kind of clip, was no where to be found. Confused, I looked more closely to see some of the G10 rubbed off on the clip-side, and that the little bolt holding the clip in had been sheered off, removing some of the G10 around it. Later, I found the broken clip and the head of the pin (or whatever) in my car seat.

I've carried my dodo in my back pocket several days a week for a couple years at least, sometimes in my front and it has never given me any problems. It was my primary EDC, but minus a pocket clip, it shall be retired. I'm one of those people that can't stand to see their favorite knife wounded anyway. My Kershaw Avalanche has stepped up to replace it in the mean time, although it may be replaced by my 960 (black is preferable in my slacks at work). I'll probably be replacing it with a Khukuri or Phoenix.

I don't know why it broke, but perhaps the very cold weather I had been in before sitting in my car (about 30F) assisted in the brittleness. I suppose in the future all my EDCs will have full steel liners to make this less likely, although the wire clip itself may be vulnerable. This is my third wire-clip Spydie and none have given me trouble though (and the wire clip is far and away my favorite clip in the industry).

Shouldn't be a problem. That same barrel is still in use in other knives from Spyderco so parts can probably send that out to you. You may have to get a clip too.

If they can't help you I have some.

Either way you're in good shape...eventually. Check with them first.

If you strike one there get in touch with me.

Those screws have sheared before. I've done it myself. You need not over tighten them. They just need to be snug to work.

You're the first person I thought of when I discovered what had happened. I'm talking to Golden right now, but they're on hiatus for the holidays (I suspect) so my reply hasn't gotten another reply. We'll see what they want to do with it. Any ideas on cleaning up the slab? It seemed pretty scratched up from riding around with the pieces of metal and G10 in my pocket for hours.

Thanks for the advice, as always, STR.

I don't think it had anything to do with the weather. I went to the A.G. Russell show earlier this year and carried an unused Dodo with me to show off :o at the Spyderco booth. My soon and I talked to the wonderful people there, and when I was putting the Dodo back in my pocket, the head popped off of the retaining screw! This was a knife that I had bought new, not a mark on it, and was the first time I had carried it. Maybe they had a small run of bad screws?

I couldn't have picked a better place for it to happen, though. Jack took it back with him and they sent it to me repaired and oiled. Thanks, Spyderco!

Ah, Spyderco customer service.

I'm sure your problem with be quickly remedied and you will once again be happy...good luck and merry Christmas!

Had the same thing happen on my first two Dodos. Think it was a bad batch or screws or something like that. Regardless, I've still got a Dodo and it's not going anywhere :)

The G10 is probably best left alone. If it were smooth its just a matter of sanding but to do that with textured removes the texture and it will look worse after trying to touch it up than now. Call em use scars.

Sure does sound like a bad run of screws. Haven't run into that issue myself but at work one week we had about a dozen new bosch 1/4 inch SDS concrete bits bust from what I think were airbubbles in the steel.
