Took some pics of the DoDo today to send to a customer wondering about the lock and thought you all might enjoy them:

Pictures of the Lock in varying degrees of opening and of it shut and open and one with a $20 bill for comparison:

Nice pictures Graham.

From the older pictures on the net, I would have expected the ball to travel completely in the tang, as you can see a little on this picture...

Are all the DoDo's as you pictured them?

Thanks,
Ted

I am a huge Spydie fan, but I just can't see the big deal about the Dodo. Maybe its just me and my job that allows me to have whatever I want, but I dont think that knife is all that and a bag of chips. I have serious reservations about the lock, especially under extreme stress, but then again, I dont know if I would ever put a knife that small under too much stress. Looks like a glorified box cutter to me.

Maybe I need to see it in person, but I have yet to find a store that carries it.

Just my two cents

Garrett

I think the Dodo looks cool!
I ordered one from New Graham Knives last night.
Can't wait to check it out.
Thanks Spyderco!!!

Hi Garrett. It's not possible to please all of the customer base with all models. That's why we have so much variation in our designs. (probably more than most companies).

WOW, cool pictures! I like how the ball is almost "piston driven", I suppose that's the best way to keep the spring at bay once there's some tension on it, otherwise it would probably pop out and spring across the room! I like the design, although I imagine people with large hands will be at a loss.

Can't wait to get one!

The Dodo is sort of an anomally - it's got a handle that would be at home on any hard-use knife, and a blade that might be more typical of a "box cutter", mostly due to the length. I think the design will let you use it really hard for everything but stabbing cuts.

One thing that doesn't come across in the pictures is just how wide this knife is. It really fills up the hand, and the ergonomics are top notch. But, as Sal said, your mileage may vary.

NGK,
Nice pictures. Is that Eric's 'symbol' next to the hole in the closed picture. I noticed that sal's 'symbol' was on the Native III handle. Sort of like US coins. The artist gets credit for the work.

Since the model designation is suffixed with a 'BL' for blue, I hope there is a non-suffixed or just 'B' designated black handled model in the future.

The blue g-10 Native stands out pretty loud against average muted toned pants/khakis. Only blue jeans seem to blend with the bright blue, and alot of people can't wear jeans on a daily (work)basis. For something that might be widely purchased for PC pocket carry in an office type workplace with sub-3" restrictions, I think a universal low-key black is a reasonable variation.

From the prototype I held, the handle is quite filling width-wise and I don't think anyone shy of a bear-sized person would have a problem with the grip size.

take care,
Ken

Thank you for the pics. The Dodo looks like a well designed little knife. And it has great materials (S30V and G-10, what could you ask for more?) and innovative features. IMO, the handles seem to pack more blade than actually is, but I had the same impression when I first saw the Calypso jr.

Thanks.

As for width of the knife it fills the hand out well, the design of the handles really fits any hand perfect I think from small to over large, I have thick hands and fingers and the knife feels great and no problems using the lock, it takes one or two openings to realize the best way to hold the knife and close the lock but once done it's a breeze to use. The knife is def. strong enough for hard use also, I really like. I like the blue myself but wouldnt mind seeing the G-10 in black either.

KenN,

I agree 110%!!!

This is why I'd like to see the Yojimbo in regular black G10 -- not because i like "Tactical Schnoztickle Blacktical" but because it does a good job of going unnoticed.

The so-called "sheeple" color -- red, blue, tan -- do get a lot of inquisitive comments that invariably end up as exclamations (not always positive.)

Hi NGK. Thanx for the pics and kind words. This is a new concept in knives for us and all of the feedback we can get is appreciated.

Boxer, yes, that is Eric Glesser's "tag". We decided to start to tag the designs and see what happens. We usually put the designers name somewhere on the knife when they're outside designs, so we thought to do the same for in house designs.

Regarding the color of the Dodo (& Yojimbo). If these "maverick" designs are well received, any colors are possible. Both Michael Janich and Eric Glesser designed them with blue in mind.

What are the chances of a low profile clip being made for the Dodo?? Kinda like what the Meerkat has. Just wondering.

Just ordered one. Can't wait. I've been waiting for this, the Yojimbo, and the ATR...2 more to go.
