Just starting to make a knife 01 looks like a good steel for a newbie. I would appreciate some help in finding a good source for the steel and info on if it comes pre annealed.
Tried to anneal a file and ended up warping it badly, I will finish it as a kitchen knife for my wife and get a little experiance hardening it.

Thanks for your time.
Hints are welcome.

All the higher carbon steels normally come annealed otherwise it's too hard to machine easily.

Most hardenable steels do: 10xx, W*, O*, A*, D*, 4xx, ATS, CPM etc - Mete
explained why. You normally want to make something out of them, which would
be impossible in hardened state.

I think that Nick Allen is selling some for a good price. Check over at the Knifemaker's Supplies and Tools page.

Not exactly so. Just will have to use abrasives instead of cutting tools...:p

Not exactly so :jerkit: . Ceramic cutting tools will work it. As will some of Ti**
coated carbide endmills . I once had to resize a few dies I made - RC62 hardened A2 steel  . Took off a few thou very easily.
