Does a little side to side play bother you in a folder?

Well... little blade play is not a very bad thing. But if it´s to much and i have to fear that the knife is falling in two more pieces while using it...

Kind regards...

with enough applied force, any folder will show blade play.

i only get concerned if i am unable to adjust/correct it.

vertical play is worse than lateral.

I find that on my Tenacious, if I grab the blade tip and forcefully move it I can feel it rocking back and forth ever so slightly. However, if I grab the blade down closer to the handle or apply a casual amount of force, there is no play.

If I tighten the pivot to the point where there is no play whatsoever no matter how hard I rock the blade, it won't deploy as smootly.

I usually loosen the pivot to the exact point where the blade will drop freely on it's own with the lock disengaged.

This is called physics. Nothing out of the ordinary.

I guess everyone has a different definition of 'play'. I can find play in almost any folding knife unless the pivot is tightened down where it takes almost 2 hands to open. I guess I assume any movement in the horizontal direction is 'play'. I'm sure I could take a knife most people say doesn't have play and be able to detect movement in the pivot. There has only been one knife I have come across that I can say has zero play while still opening easily and that is a Kershaw 0500 MUDD and I have played with hundreds of folders from $20-$500.

That said horizontal movement in the pivot does not bother me unless it is enough to shake the knife back and forth and hear rattling or enough for the blade to hit the liners. I like little resistance when I open my knives so a little play is acceptable and most of my knives have at least some. This small amount is only detectable if I am looking for it and I would never know it was there while actually using the knife which is what really matters. It would take a lot of play to be able to detect while cutting something and then it would bother me since I mainly care how they perform.
