Does a " perfect knife " really fit into the life of a knife enthusiast?

One opinion...

The perfect knife is probably not the one you are most proud of
Or the best looking
Or even your most used

The perfect knife is the one you grab heading out of town. Good enough in form and size that you trust it to do its job as a solo carry. Not so precious that your world would be rocked if you lose it. One that can stay in pocket for a duration of a trip without concern or consideration about it.

I think when it all boils down to that choice. That's the knife.

I have three Buck 112s, and for the last couple years, I've been carrying one of them almost every day. I have a bunch of knives, but the 112 just suits my needs, and I like using it. I guess that's about as close to perfect as I'm going to get. But that's just me.

I feel like there are many perfect knives for various categories and reasons . But then we ultimately have them to use to do Whatever and Whenever we want them to do within reason . I have a few knives that include a few patterns and brands , both old and new , and I feel like this one may very well be the closest thing to perfect , for me , as I have . It is made of Unobtainium .

There is no such thing as perfect, because my needs change depending on where I am going/ what I am doing. I enjoy the variety of changing up my carry usually daily, and sometimes several times a day.
There are some that I love enough I could drop in my pocket and make it work universally, but variety is the spice of life.
Another reason it is hard to find perfection is because usually when you gain something in one area, you give up something in another. For example, a big thick handled knife like a Buck 110 feels great in the hand for heavy duty cutting, but something slim and light like a Douk Douk disappears in you pocket. So I find myself trying to figure out what level of compromise works best for me.

I'm 62 years old. I've spent the last 15 years or so trying to find "The One". The knife that my grandchildren (which I don't even have yet) would associate with their Papa.
Yes, this Case Stockman is it. Oh, this SAK is the only knife I'll ever need... This Buck 501 is it, I'll get rid of all these others.... Yeah, I have a problem....I love them all....

And then, to top it all off, you do find the ONE. And because of its pristine perfection and unparalleled usefulness in your eyes you are afraid to unperfect it by use and so it sits on display for all to see its perfection. And you still don't have the perfect knife to use and enjoy. We are hopeless!

I'll give a good understanding of All this.....
I use this a lot.

I LOVE pizza.
I really do.
All pizza is good pizza!
I literally think I could eat it for one meal each day...... Every day.

But, I still like BBQ, and stir fry, and grilled fish, and Tacos....all kinds of stuff.

Just cause I think pizza is Perfect doesn't mean I'm giving up eating Tacos....

-so with knives it's the Same thing.
I believe that it was Faulkner who said: “There are no bad whiskies just some, that are better than others.” Very similar to your pizza analogy and exactly what we are talking about here with knives.

In an aside for us makers. i have made thousands of knives. Doubt that I have made a “perfect” one yet. Been close.

I love almost everything CRK. My one knife that would be a dream knife will never exist…. a medium Sebenza 21 with Buckeye Burl scales. The large 21 is a little too big and the small 21 is a little too small. I still love these knives the most, use and collect them but a Medium 21 would be perfect I believe.

Every knife I acquire is perfect, at least for a little while until I discover something I don't like about it. Then it's relegated to the pile and pulled out when I think some defining characteristic will be beneficial for certain tasks, in which case it becomes perfect again. At least for a little while. Sometimes I'll rotate it back into general use and carry it around for several days to see if it can be perfect again, and it might be. Eventually, if the things I don't like about it really do outweigh its usefulness to me, then I'll put it in another pile of knives to be sold off at my convenience, hopefully earning enough to fund my next perfect knife. So it goes.

It's a simple fix. Heat the knife in an oven to 375* for 40 minutes, take out, beat it with a ball-peen hammer until sized to taste.

Thank me later.

(Much later.... ☺️ 🍻 🤣 )

What would be a perfect knife ? A one which can do everything whatever your skill ? Which never dulls and don't need to be sharpened and maintained ?
How boring it would be.
That said, i carry this knife since 11 years, every day.

Perfect. But fortunately at some extent only.

Dan.

What would be a perfect knife ?
The " perfect knife " would be your dream knife

If you could imagine your perfect dream knife, more in terms of mere desire and not necessarily out of pure practicality, if you could have this knife would it even matter that it was everything you ever dreamed of ?
If you could have your dream knife would you be done , or would you still carry and explore other knives ?
