Hi Everyone

looking to add an edc sized khukri, something to have around camping, not really an edc, just something a bit smaller. I was thinking of 9-10 inches... is the bilton the one im after? should i loook for a small AK or even a pen knife?

The Pen knife makes a great camp edc in the woods knife. They have several that would work. A Belt knife, a Bura Daily Carry, the Bilton you mentioned which is a bit small for some chores, A Katunje is another good one.

There's lots of choices in that 10" range. I think the Katunje might be more towards 12 or 13.

A Baby Villager Chiruwa AK would be perfect if you don't need to do any real wood processing, and the BDC Bawanna mentioned comes in all sizes. I have a 12" model that comes camping/hiking with me a lot. There are other Baby versions of quite a few models, and all are great in their own right. A 12" AK would be good too. Biltons are very light, but good knives from what I've heard. I've been looking for one since day 1.

If you need to be able to cut wood but still want lightweight, consider a Keshar Lal Village Utility Knife, or KLVUK for short. Usually about 15" but only about a pound, they're a light but capable blade. I used one for my family's Thanksgiving turkey, so it can definitely handle food processing as well as wood processing.

The website only shows the "standard" models, and also is not very current. I almost consider it a time capsule of sorts to when Uncle Bill was alive. There are tons of other models out there, usually originating as special orders that became heavily requested, regional variations on a similar design, or just new kamis coming up with new blades. Keep an eye on DOTD posts, and look through old ones if you want. You'll discover new models every day. Just when you think you have or you've seen them all, BAM! A new model you've never seen pops up. That's the wonder, and danger, of HI :)

Pen Knife for a small camping blade. Bura Daily Carry, Baby CAK, or AK Bowie Mini (12")

simko:

It's not clear whether you mean blade length or overall length when you say 9-10 inches. In the usual HI terminology, length means overall length.

Anyway, you can't go wrong with a Pen Knife and they seem to run shorter than most of the other models. Here are a couple of nice ones:

The first one, by Kumar Kami, is 12.5" OAL and 18 oz. The second, by Lachhu Kami, is 15" OAL and 18 oz. Both are very robust blades, suitable for all camp chores as long as you don't need to chop down trees.

The baby AK would be great. Also, a small katunge might be pretty handy at 11ish".

My Baby CAK is the perfect size for an edc blade and can handle a lot of stuff if you don't need to chop firewood.

the recently offered smaller Foxy Follies would do the job as well; not really a chopper though.

For two hundred years, I've been pushing the 12 inch villager AK as the most suitable camp/hiking knife. (Well, not quite 200, but for a long time.)

You won't be cutting down trees, you're going to walk around more brush than you will ever want to cut, you can use it with a baton to split thick stuff for firewood, and it is virtually invisible to other folks on the trail. It is handier than an axe for most, lighter than a hatchet, and uses its weight more effectively, generally speaking.

The villager models tend to have a longer handle, making them a better fit for western hands.

But the other folks are correct also.

Soooo...

you have to decide what you want. :)

Best wishes.

I gotta cry BS Kismet, I think it's actually 197 years but hey we all exaggerate just a little bit sometimes.

Momma says it's like a little white lie and a little white lie never hurt nobody.

I agree with your age old philosophy regardless.

Yes! Depends on where your from?

Well...technically not a Khuk but still a good thought;)

I like the Baby AK for EDC khuk. Really depends on the laws of the land sadly enuff. 5 1/2" here. That leaves Micro Bowie and not much else for EDC unless I stay on my property.

Ndog, I measured the "baby" Foxy Folly by Purna that I recently got, and while the overall length is about 9 3/8", the blade measured from the bolster to the tip is 5 1/4" (well, maybe 5 5/16"), but definitely less than 5 1/2", so you'd be OK with one of these baby FFs!

Let me add to this that while I constantly rotate my hiking knives ad khuks, my wife took this advice some 3 or 4 years back and carries a Turtha 12" Villager AK on her hip when we walk in the woods. It's light, handy, and has never let her down.

Thanks for that info MBob! I wondered about that when they came out. Thats about the same size as my DBVUK. Actually Its a LocBVUK. I seem to have misplaced it? Ive never lost a Khukri. Blastphemy eh? I think it must still be packed in a camping bag somewhere I havent unpacked yet. Hope the dogs didnt eat the handle off and leave it in the back yard:eek:

Ndog, here's my BFF with my MMB/IBBB and my Katunje. Does TX law count sharp egde length or overall blade length? Tip to cho would definitely be under 5"

Gotta get a pic with my remaining VBCAK at some point. I gave my first to a good friend who is in the military, with the kydex sheath I made. That's gonna be his go-to belt knife.

Oh yes! That would definitely work! Thx for the pic SG. TX counts the length from tip to bolster. Nice knife. Nice wood on it too!

Thanks dog! Took some measurements this morning. Tip to bolster is 5.5" exactly on the "long side," and 5.25" on the "short side." Measured straight out from the handle is 5.25". So you be good in TX, unless you run across a cop having a bad day. Oh and OAL on mine is about 9.5", so any BFF that size or under should be fine.
