Quick poll here:

You just got a new CRK; the blade is off center. Does it bug you? How do you proceed?

It would bug me on any knife but I would consider it intolerable on a Sebenza 21 or Mnandi. If it's an Umnumzaan or 25, I would take it apart and make sure that it can't be adjusted to center the blade better, before sending it back for adjustment.

I agree with silverds. Other knives, i can understand there can he bladeplay, but a sebenza with its super tight tolerances, should not have any bladeplay or off center blade. Why else would someone pay ridiculous money for a tool that a $20 tool can do.

Drives me nuts, can't stand my truck to be out of alignment either!

My answer only applies to any CRK and other "high end" knives. If I buy a run of the mill production knife the centering doesn't have to be perfect as long as the knife is functional. Once you get to around $150+, a centered blade is expected.

I would take it a part and re-torque all the screws. I had a Mnandi before that was slightly off center but just re-torquing the screws fixed it. The Mnandi is only held by two screws so it might be more prone to that then a Sebenza.

I am OK with it as long as I intend it to be a user knife and it isn't so bad that it rubs the scales. If it were a non-user collector piece I'd expect perfectly centered (although I don't have any collector only pieces and don't think I ever will).

Not at all, a little tweeking and it can be brought back to center.
I've used my 25 for almost a year with it being off center. It took that long before I broke it down for cleaning.

Depends on if it's visually off or someone is being a bit ridiculous and measuring how far off center. OMG!!! It's off by .005in...what am I going to do!?!??!?!

If it's visually off, I will do the same as Ajack- If it affects function, I will take it in/send it in if I cannot correct it.

Depends on the severity, I guess. Close but not perfect is ok. If its immediately noticeable or close to rubbing I'll try to re-center.

On other, less pricey knives? No, as long as there's no contact with handles. I expect pretty much spot on with CRKs, though. I stopped buying Insingos due to receiving a couple with uneven grinds along the swedge that gave the appearance of making the blade off centered.

Nope, as long is it doesn't rub, effect the function of the knife in any way, and is not "crazy" off center....

A little bit of "off centre" is a non-issue for me.....

I am not even sure if my CRK's are 100% OCD centred, but to my eye they look perfect, and that's more than good enough.

About half of all my knives, CRKs included are about 1-2% off of dead center. Anymore than this and its not acceptable.

It would bug me with all their talk of tolerances I find it hard to believe one wouldn't be centered

This is directly from CRK:

The relevance is a carbon fiber sebenza; which NIB has an off center blade.

"the issue is not with a particular blade - it is caused by a couple of factors.
The first being that the Titanium handle is stronger than the Carbon Fiber handle and this means the titanium "pushes" towards the Carbon Fiber and the Carbon Fiber "pushes" back against the titanium but because the titanium is "stronger" the Carbon Fiber doesn't push as hard and the blade slowly shifts towards the Carbon Fiber side.
This is most evident with the lock arm which has "tension" set on the arm and it is continually pushing the handle and blade towards the Carbon Fiber scale.
Another factor is use - as you use the knife the pivot loosens over time and allows more "push" towards the Carbon Fiber scale."

Therefore the CF Sebenzas MAY have a centered blade, but there is no guarantee of one, and if it is off center, there is not much you can do about it.

For the money it better be centered. I don't buy the carbon fiber thing. All the zt 0452s I've handled have been perfectly centered for less than half the price. From what I understand CRK is known for precise fit and finish. If they can't center these knives why even bother.

Ya the only thing that separates a crk from a zt is tolerances and customer service, with Heather gone and tolerances slipping, is it still worth it?
