Does any other knife company have anything like "blems"?

Spyderco has a once-a-year sale at one of their stores in Golden, Colorado. You have to be there, AFAIK. Hopefully, next year I will be.
Sonny

Not really. They didn't have one last year, not enough stock to service the expected demand. They did have one this year. Yes, you have to be there. If you want the best selection, you have to be there early. I dropped about $600 at the last sale.

I sure hope the knife companies mark them some way because they could be passed off as good ones and consumers could get cheated.

They do. Kershaw puts XXXX on their blades to signify a factory second. Spyderco cuts a small notch at the top of the blade.

All of them that I know of do. Kershaw uses a "XXXX" mark on the blade, Cold Steel presses a "2" mark on most of them in an unobtrusive spot...not sure what other companies do. Some just don't even sell seconds. Edit: Ninja'd! :p

For what it's worth, I'm not a manufacturer but any item that I get that fails our inspection process for cosmetic reasons gets sold as a "Grade B" item at discount. They're not factory seconds, though--they still have the factory warranty and many are technically within company spec, just not up to our standard.

Yes, my Buck Hoodlum has an ugly notch in the top of the blade. I bought another one and it, too, had a notch. Yes, I know what the notch is for, but I still don't like it. I wish Buck would make a "notchless" version, but so far I think the family wants to keep it exactly as Ron designed it.

With respect, I don't think that's what's being discussed here? :o

With no respect whatsoever, wrong thread, buddy. :D

I can speak from experience that Spyderco does sell their "seconds", but they only do it at the annual sale...presuming they have one like they did this year. I went to the Spyderco Factory Outlet the Monday following the sale and asked about seconds and was told that they only will sell them at that once a year sale. She was pleasant, but wouldn't even tell me what they had left. I don't know if they do something else with the ones that don't sell out, but I know they don't offer them to the public on a day to day basis.

sure, i'm betting quite a few have blems and they just don't tell the customer about it (they'll wait if the customer complains or returns it) or they don't know it's a blem (poor quality control).

i consider poor fitting scales, uneven grinds, or the whole blade is slightly bent on a $50+ knife to be a blem.

Thanks for pointing out Boye's page for seconds. I have been wanting one for a while, I don't boat much but I figure if I get in a bragging contest with a real knife snob it would be a trump card. "well yes, you have 20 Busse's, very nice. But where's your knife of DENDRITIC COBALT!?"
