You just aren't hanging around with the right knifemakers.
I know a guy that actually built his forge door in the shape of a dragon's face. The same guy "sings" to his knives. He sing-chants "ohm" in the tone he wants the knife to sound like at the end. It seems to work.
I know a number of smiths that talk to their knives. Some chant, some talk to them like you would a small child, some tell them what they want to be used for, etc.
Some people feel a certain "magic" in forging knives...the blending of all elements. The steel is earth, the fire and air from forging, and water for cooling.
Whether any of it is true or just superstition, who cares. A good behaviorist will tell you it is just goal setting through creative imagery.
Bruce, you need to hang out at a Renaissance Faire. You'll find alot more "normal" smiths like you.
