Does *anybody* else lean toward small-ish folders?

I prefer sub 3 inch blades for daily carry and agree that in my case that is all I need. At almost 49 I have not been in a situation where I needed a larger knife for self defense plus I would rather use other tools for that purpose. That still does not preclude me from having and using some larger knives when camping, kayaking and rafting.

With that said there are times on the weekend when I do enjoy sticking a larger folder in my jeans pocket. There is also one that always resides in my car console and my briefcase at times.

Sure is great that we have a variety to choose from.

I carried a BM 750 for years, but every time I used it someone would gasp at what a big blade it was. Like Bastid, on the weekends and evenings I'll carry a larger folder (710 or lg Seb), but for everyday stuff, the small Sebenza is all I need. Man, did it take a pile of money to figure that out!

Normal daily cutting chores I'll drag out the Hiker SAK always in the LFP.

I'll also carry a folder thats got a blade from 3-4 inches as an EDC and possible defensive knife which can still be used for general chores in a pinch if necessary.

Presently I'm carrying a Perrin 5" straight in a drawpoint sheath strong side most of the time and thats purely SD oriented.

Normal folders week or weekend are usually the Chinook 11, Persian lately, an Endura once in awhile, sometimes the Elishewitz ti that got a 3 1/2" blade. I'll stay under 4 most of the time.

I have played over the years with the bigger folders and they become cumbersome over extended periods of time. I used to carry the bigger folders often enough as they were considered SD and I wanted a little bit more blade, but now that I'm Perrin-ing the folders can be brought back in line with something a little bit easier to carry daily but could be brought to bare in a SD situation if necessary.

I'm another for the 2.75-3.25 blade length group. With that said. I tend to carry two knives, a smaller piece for opening packages and eating, a larger blade for when I need to do some realy cutting. Some of my EDC's small Sebbie, Mnandi snakewood, Umfaan, Buck/Mayo, BM 705 forum knife, Mini AFCK M2, Calypso Jr., Spyderco Mouse, and My large and small Peter Atwood Solar Arc's. To name a few. Also I don't usually like clips on my knives.

Yup I have em, but I don't need to advertise it.

I also prefer smaller blades, folder or fixed blade. I'm currently carrying my CRKT F4. My other EDC is my swat baby framelock which has a blade of about 2.75". I've also got a couple of really small knives that live car key ring and a small Wenger SAK that lives on a rig I wear around my neck, so I'm never completely without a knife, however small. I'm kinda liking the looks of the Benchmade Activator and Fallkniven WM1 right now.

And I thought I'd gotten tired of looking at and talking about knives...

Most "pocket knives" would fall into the small folder category.

It's normally the closed dimensions that are all important rather than the blade length for in-pocket carry.

The SAKs are 3.5" closed for Victorinox (91mm); and 3.25" closed for the Wengers (85mm).

Case knives in the popular 6318 pattern Stockman is 3 5/8"; and the 6347 pattern Stockman is 3 7/8".

Personally I find 3 7/8" just a bit too big for comfortable in-pocket carry, whereas 3 5/8" seems OK.

My EDC is a Victorinox SAK at 91mm/3.5" closed - and about 3 layers/backsprings is about the maximum for me.

Custom Victorinox Scientist is my EDC, with the Yeoman the knife for when I have to travel by air (checked baggage, and carried after I arrive)

When I first starting collecting knives the local dealer had to think I was crazy because I wanted really small knives and as Vintage knives are concerned I love Case 6333's & 6327's made in 1970 or before, but have even had smaller knives in my collection....As the years went by I came to realize that the big knife myth is basically perpetuated by dealers. Most of the larger Vintage knives are found in Mint condition because Nobody (few people) actually used these patterns, and dealers tend to shy away from small knives (especially when buying). In real life though, you find alot of small knife collectors and users...So the truth is, people like small knives and want small knives they just don't want to pay for them...

My small Sebenzas are my "big" folders.
I really like something around 2.75" as my EDC. My Victorinox Settler is ALWAYS in my pocket. Away from work I usually carry a second knife in the same size range. My Mnandi and Umfaan see far more pocket time than the Sebbies.
There are two, possibly three knives on my want list now...Another Mnandi, a WH T-10, and maybe a LW Loveless City knife.

My current EDC is a WH T-10 BT, it is the perfect size for me. I just got a Mnandi, because it is a similar style of knife. I found the Umfaan a little too small, or maybe just not the right blade shape...

I find that small knives are fantastic as EDCs in an office environment, but as has been suggested, they IMO are much more sensitive to blade shape and handle design - you just can't get away with as much being wrong.
