Does anybody use a woodman's pal machete?

I'd like to see the edge thinned a bit and sharpened all the way out to the end. I did like the brush hook for certain situations.

That is exactly what I needed to do with one that I was give so it would cut worth a darn. It is not as good a chopper as some in my collection, but it holds it's own better now that it has been reground, although if I have the room to saw I use the Silky for the heavy cutting and the WP for limbing and such. I prefer my kukuris for heavy chopping in general over the WP.

I have the #145 lightweight. Cut into a 1" norway maple sapling. Barely. Torqued it a little to get it out. Bent. No spring whatsoever. Stayed bent until I stepped on it. Hung it in the woodshed to scare kids,... about all its good for so far as I can tell. I've thought from time to time about picking up the full D guard model because it looks like something from The Fighting CBs. Probably won't. I now use a japanese hand axe with an 8" laminated steel blade. Cost about the same. Strips tree limbs all day. Weird though, because only ground on one side. I don't think it would be safe for lefties to use.

In my neck of the woods a machete is a joke. The WP is a better machine by design for the Northwest.

Really?...ever try any of the larger, heavier machetes? I think you'd be surprised by the performance. Something like any of these guys:

Up my way we have everything from pine up to beech, maple, oak, etc., and I find a machete works great even on frozen hardwood. At least that's my experience. Use what you like though. :o

The problem is the longer blade. Salal catches everything and trying to cut through it just drives you and the blade into the ground. Don't get me wrong, I like machetes, but they just don't work in my area.................. for me.

Gotcha'. :)

Something tells me you'd like one of these guys, but that's just a personal hunch. :o

A friend has one. I got to try it out and compare it to my M-43 kukri's performance.

No comparison the kukri not ony FAR out chops it, but is far more comfortable and way more versatile in use.

curse you 42!
where can I get one of those? - especially the longer handled one!

I used one in the Marine Corps while we would be trekking through the jungle. The Marine Corps still buys and uses them all the time for jungle work, and they work great.

Spear & Jackson and Bulldog are two U.K. companies that make good billhooks. Right now the only real source for them is through eBay UK if you can find someone willing to ship out-of-country. The long-handled one is a Yorkshire billhook. If I ever start a business of my own someday I'll be carrying those. :p

I have some Spear & Jackson handsaws - good stuff.
That's just cruel showing bits like that you can't even get in this country.
got specs? I wonder if I could make one out of a flattened plow disk...

Unfortunately I don't know the specific dimensions, but I'm sure you would have no problem whipping one up to your own size preferences. Billhooks come in all sizes!

Like I said, you can find folks on eBay UK that will ship out-of-country. I just haven't found any actual retail websites that will. They all say "UK Delivery Only" :o

You could grab a Morris including the long handled Yorkshire pattern from here for few quid. Worldwide shipping.

Well how about that! I had stumbled across that site before but never noticed the international shipping!

Just found ToolNut.co.uk-- They even have a US currency converter...:D

it is compact unlike a 18 inch machete so it does carry easily. and where else can you find a combat manual for a chopper. there is a manual for fighting with the woodsmans pal. if i carried it i would not feel under knived anywhere in north america. was used a lot in the pacific in ww2 and was well respected by the troops.

There you have it

Oops
Didn't mean to revive an old thread...

Oh well. Life goes on.

Since this thread has popped back up, does anyone have any experience with the Gerber Gator Machete Pro? Basically their version of the Woodsman's Pal.

Listed at 18oz, no d-guard to get in the way, and seems a nice size. Can't find mention of the thickness, though. Also, the sheath is kinda ridiculous.

Still, can be had for $40. I'm thinking about picking one up. Even if just to review it here.

Based on the look of it I've got a few performance concerns, but you never know until you try it! I haven't seen anyone carrying them yet, but I haven't looked that hard either. :)
