Does anybody uses helmets instead of hats?

Just thinking if I should get myself a cork helmet for travels - cannot fold it, but it is definitely waterproof, you can hang it on your belt, and it protects your head from hitting tree branches. Does anybody uses/used one? What was your experience?
Thanks,

I used to wear a traditional/British Colonial explorers helmet but everyone kept taking the pith :-)

On trail crew, I put my hardhat on in the morning and don't take it off until dinner. The things don't get too hot, are waterproof, in a pinch can work as a bucket, and certainly keep your noggin safe. Never tried it for hiking or general woods loafing, pretty sure I never will.

I wear a skate helmet if I'm whitewater canoeing, but that's it. Trips with no river portions, I don't use one.

I were a helmet when I ride the bike (bicycle), participate in rope activities, and ski. Now that I think of it, I have also donned a hard hat when doing things around the house where the potential of something falling on my head was increased. Eye protection of some sort always accompanies the helmet in my pursuits.

I have not felt the need for a helmet when hiking, but if it's something you want to do, I won't discourage it. You only have one melon. If you feel it needs protecting in a given situation, by all means, put the helmet on.

When you get your "Cork" helmet, be sure to cover it with foil, that way the others will think your normal and you'll still be protected.

Everyone seems to be wearing them nowadays, must be some new fad, wannabe's from Iraq?:)

Perhaps you should consider taking up a less dangerous pursuit....knitting or analyzing the wallpaper pattern over your bed.......

Seems a little (read; very) rediculous to dawn a helmet for hiking, not needed unless extremely accident prone. :D

I can't ever remember saying "If I only was wearing a helmet!" while I was hiking or camping. :D

If I'm travelling to an urban area I usually throw a light weight Pro-Tec helmet in with my gear (along with gloves, goggles, and a dust mask). I'm sure a lot of folks would have liked to have had the above items on 9/11. As far as daily wear though, no thanks.

only use a helmet for adventure races because its mandatory even for the running / hiking legs. also when i'm on my mtb for obvious reasons. couple of guys i know use them when they make more difficult climbs but thats about it. depending on the climate a hat might be more useful.

Pith helmets are just thick hats, to help insulate from the sun and heat. I've been looking for a deal on an aluminum hard hat as a rain and sun hat, but they've become collectors items. I have a couple plastic sun "helmets" that do work-- like the white plastic ones the mail carriers wear.

During the hot summer months you can often find me in a pith helmet while wearing an all white linen suit; I sit in my bamboo "papa-san", underneath a ceiling fan all the while slowly sipping Lime Rickey's and appearing inscrutable. During these times I have been known to wield a fly-swatter like a scepter, and mumble classic lines from late 1940's Sydney Greensteet films. ;)

Don't forget to paint the inside of the foil flat black (very important detail: just the inside -- if you do the outside it's not going to reflect away the bad stuff) before covering it.

Gloss black = no good. Must be flat, no reflections. :)

Wow! A helmet I can wear on my belt, when I should be wearing it on my head to prevent being hit by tree branches!

Seriously! If you can't walk around without running into tree branches, you have issues that are beyond any help wearing a helmet can provide.

However, you can make a fashion statement and get an autographed NFL, "team of your choice," helmet. Try it out on the coworkers and get some opinions.

My dog pithed on my old helmet, kept the dog got rid of the helmet.

Sorry guys, sometimes I just can't resist the temptation, but some of this is just too funny to pass up. These forums are an endless source of information and humor. I'm pretty much house bound now and this is a major pass time/hobby for me.:)

We know how much you miss riding to school on the short bus and having your mommy snap the chinstrap on your helmet for you each morning, but you're just going to have to buck up and get over it-- you're a big boy now.
