Pith helmets are very practical in hot weather. They were standard issue for the VC and NVA. The design was originated in French Indochina. It is a step up from wearing a straw hat. They are only called helmets because they are stiffer than regular hats. The only problem is that people look at you strange and Vietnam vets might take a shot at you.
Those cork "helmets" were popular just after WWII. Frankly, they work great, but you look pretty darn unusual these days if you wear one. I sort of like hard hats and if they were more mainstream, I'd wear one other than around work environment. They are pretty comfortable too.
