I posted this thread in the sheath forums here on BF:

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...-Authentic-Kephart-sheath-could-use-some-help

I asked if anyone had more information concerning the sheath that Horace Kephart carried his spearpoint blade in. I would like to try to reproduce it - or use it as inspiration to make my own sheath for my own Kephart (A BRKT Kephart - although I own a few ML Kepharts as well).

Here are the photo's I can find:

If anyone has any other information, pictures, or help with the sheath seen above - OR - a picture of a Colclesser Brothers Kephart knife (That would also be cool to see) - please post up.

Thanks so much for your help with this little project of mine. I have no other interest other than to try and make a decent reproduction of this sheath for myself.

Right off the bat, it is ambidextrous. It looks as if it was once a deeper sheath. It has signs of a welt than ran much higher. I think it was cut down(hard to be sure from the pic, as I can't make out stitch holes). It could be that what I see as welts are belt slits. Also, I see that it attached to his belt or shirt via a button, which is a convenient mounting system. Maybe the button prevented the sheath from sliding along the belt. I know very little of Kephart but this blade and sheath have a lot of character.... unlike you, TF...... BAM!! Oh ya, I went there!!!

Back in the old tyme days, suspenders were much more common than now.

It's possible that he had no belt and it would mount on the buttons on his trousers that his suspenders linked to.

Ooooh, that's good, Count. There are lots of writings about Kephart. I wonder if he pronounced his name "key-fart".

Yeah - I found it last night and posted on another forum:

Here he is carrying it on his belt.

However, as Rick said - that could be a button hole in the middle and he carried it multiple ways.

I am in contact with the Curator of the The Mountain Heritage Center that actually has the knife and the sheath. I will be asking / begging her for better photo's.

Perhaps, if she is willing, she could give us some specs as well. That would help those trying to make a replica of this knife in the future.

I think that would be a cool tribute to Mr. Kephart.

I received an e-mail back from the Curator this morning - and the director of the museum is out this week - but she will be asking him for higher quality photo's of the knife and sheath with scale for reference. I ensured her that his information would be shared with the community and was not to be used as any sort of proprietary information.

Hopefully this request will be granted and we will be able to get some great photo's - with scale!

Cross your fingers!
