Does anyone carry a Strider PT in the woods?

Hey fellas

I know we don't talk about Striders on here all that much. Probably because they are more of a tactical type knife. I've been drooling over a PT for quite some time and am seriously thinking about getting one. However, I'm not not the "tactical" type and am interested to know of it's worth in areas I frequent like local trails, camp sites, etc.

I currently use a BM Mini-grip which is a fraction of the price and is ROCK solid, but I have been fantasizing about this Strider for a while. :D

Thoughts? Comments?

I have a PT and love it. I have had an AR and SNG and prefer the PT to either of the others. As a woods knife...nah, not really for me. The ergos are not condusive(sp?) to long use. I have some pics somewhere with my PT trying to do a fuzz stick, it worked o.k. but was hard on my hand. They have kind of a blocky construction, if you rounded the handles it may perform better. They are great for EDC type chores and the warranty and bombproof construction make them great for those type of tasks as I have never worried about breaking it.
I like to carry mine day to day and in a pinch it would work in the woods but it would not be my first choice. My first choice for a woods folder in the Emerson A100:thumbup::thumbup:

Hope that helped

I had the SMF, SNG and PT, all great knives. The edges were a little thick on the SMF and SNG. So much so that I traded them all for Sebenzas. For a day trip, the PT would work great. It's edge isn't as thick as the SMF, and is unobtrusive in the pocket. For something intensive outdoors however, I would be leery of any folder. I regularly have to clean my Sebenzas, and had to clean my Striders, and my only other tacticool folders, Ritter Grips and a Spyderco Military. It is amazing how a little pocket lint can throw off the locks (frame/axis/liner). Now, the lock on my Striders was very tough, and the ergo design was great. They were designed with more of a military application. Not that the Sebs are the great wilderness outdoor folder. I would go for a huge stockman, or a large trapper. Maybe a Remington 1306 design from Queen or AG Russell.

I realize there are fixed blade restrictions in your hood, as well.

I bought a Strider PT as a gift for my best friend when he was commissioned as an Infantry Officer in the United States Army.

It has been through IOBC, Jump School, a deployment workup, and is on its way to Iraq in a few months.

He loves it.

The PT's a little small for me. I guess that comes from EDC'ing a SMF or Spyderco Military daily.

I wouldn't mind getting stuck in the woods with one, but as it's been mentioned, it's a folder, and a small one at that. For woods I'd look for something like Temp 2, Landi MPX, etc. Larger fixed blade knives.

The PT is a good knife, but it's just not for me. I would look more towards the SnG/SMF, and if you plan on edc'ing it, look for a CC version.

If I had to pick a folder, for about the same price as the PT, pick up two or three Spyderco Militarys.

I have a PT and EDC it during the weekends. Errand running, light duty inside the house, etc.
However, when I go outside to do garage work or some gardening, I clip a Buck-Strider 889 to my pocket. (Same size as the SnG) I find that the slightly large size is more handy for opening up fertilizer/soil bags, digging up the occasional weed or two with the blade point, and many more of the outside chores where I don't mind getting that 889 very grungy.

I definitely recommend the PT as an EDC knife for 'regular' carry though. I've had mine for ~4 years and have not babied it at all. Only had to sharpen it 3 times in all that time - takes and holds an edge very well. And, that's after using it to chop up cardboard boxes after moving to a new house...

Just get a PT - you won't regret it.

Regards,
Mike

Thanks for all the input fellas, I reall do appreciate it.

Silentthunder - I know you feel my pain... :) Luckily we are good with open carry on FB, but in the state parks there is still a 3 inch blade restriction that covers FB and folders.

I didn't know that restriction was in effect in my neighboring state, your hood.
