Does anyone EDC a megafolder (4.5"+)?

The spyderco military is my largest folder (4inch blade). I can see myself eventually getting a cs recon1 Xl just to have. I have other folders ranging in sizes from 2.5 inch blades to 3.75. I enjoy knives like women, all shapes and sizes.

After carrying this for a while it's made my other "large" knives feel a rather dainty. :D

I was actually a little surprised at how quickly one can become used to a big folder. I have carried this knife as an EDC and found it to be very usable as a knife, but it is just a bit too big and a bit too silly next to my benchmark of a large CRK of some sort. :)

Well, I know the OP said "apart from SD", but I think that is the only reason to carry a mega-folder other than biking/hiking/backpacking were it might fit inside the pack or the pocket, but have twice the reach of a fixed blade in the same total length when carried.

I mean, some folks here carry a large Vaquero (6in. blade) to trim off branches and plants that get on the way on biking trails and routes, and I use my Gunsite or Rajah II to chop off little branches that I can't reach with my hands and pruning shears, but get on the way when trying to maneuver large loppers and retractable scissors/pruners.

The Ti-lite I messed up fits inside very tight places, digs into the ground easily, and saws vines and roots like a champ

I find it more efficient, and less tiring.

So, while I carry these for SD only:

I carry and use these when working in the woods, and they have their place there:

And I use my Pocket Bushman (4.5 in.) when it's the "temporada de calçots", something like "Tarraconese-onion season", when we collect, cut, peel and eat hundreds of these "calçots", a type of onion from Spain, in massive parties and meetings. The PB holds up to the task of diggind roots, and sometimes batoning dry branches and twigs.

PS: This here are "calçots", as we call them in Catalonia. Delicious ;)

The folders I carry the most have blades in the 3.5-4.5 range. Knives like the Spyderco Endurance or Military, ZT 0452 or 0550, BM 710 and so on. I have bigger folders, like the XL Talwar, old Vaquero Grande and a couple of XL Voyagers from Cold Steel but they just don't fit into most of my pockets. I usually wear slacks or khakis, so the closed length of these knives is just too long to fit in my pockets.

Sometimes during the winter I'll throw one into my jacket pocket, and I actually like the extra blade length for some jobs. It's the long handle that sometimes makes them uncomfortable for utility tasks. For me, the bottom line is that I just don't need a blade over 4" often enough to justify carrying something like an XL Talwar every single day.

How well does the big blade work for simple EDC stuff, like cutting tape or something quick, zip ties etc.?

Surprisingly well. Lots of leverage.

I have EDC's large and small and in between. Box cutters/construction knives are fine for a single cut or two in drywall or a box. But they get dull so fast its frustrating,

I have carried large ZT's currently the largest folder I carry is a Benchmade 710.

Generally I carry a leatherman Surge and small fixed blade (2" cutting edge in CPM 10V) Holds and edge and I can cut boxes up with it for a week without it getting noticeably dull.

I'm sure it can cut as well as a small knife. ;)

Exactly and in many cases; even better than a small knife... ;):D:thumbup:

Some big folders that I've carried before - the Rajah II, Gunsite and Military have seen the most use/carry out of the bunch. The XL Espada is just comical to carry, still fun though.

I'm a vegetarian co it's convenient to carry my Cold Steel Ti-lite VI. It slices very well. It's very convenient for the occasional melon. And I also edc it for the "oh yeah it very good sd knife as a bonus too."
