Does anyone else hate the proliferation of serrated blades on small knives....?

I have a 450 that over half the blade is serrated..It looks weird but works VERY well a a EDC!Part of that is that it's a 'Buckcoat'..The only one i have EDCed..I plan to pick up a few more as it really stays sharp.

I have a couple of combo-edge knives. Happily, neither of them is a Buck.

I've really tried to warm to serrated edges. I find that for most of my uses, they get in the way. Cutting fruit, veggies, salami, cheese, especially when I need to use my thumb against the work up close to the ricasso.

Over the years, after a number of attempts to acclimate myself to the combo edge, I finally developed what amounts to a religious aversion to them.

On the other hand, I do have a couple of knives with two or three blades, one of which is serrated along the full length of the blade. Those make great heavy-use blades for breaking down boxes or other edge-unfriendly cutting tasks. When the whole blade is unapologetically serrated, and there's a companion blade that's entirely plain edge, I'm a happy camper.

The combo edge, however, just leaves me cold.

Which is too bad, really, because I would really like to pick up a RedPoint or FlashPoint. I like everything else about them.

I'll just have to wait for the "mature audiences" edition of that series. - :D - Heck, maybe they could release a limited production run and call it the "old fogey's classic stick shift edition."

I'd buy one in a heartbeat.

I don't mind them as much on a longer blade where you have more blade to work with.

I wonder if Buck would put a serration on a 120 for me?

Serrated blades are handy on a small knife if you have the occasion to cut a heavy strap or a piece of rope like this one in a hurry.

Serrations are great when you need them and a nuisance when you don't. Have a couple of partially serrated blades
that are real handy (work related) - for everything else - plain edge.

I think proliferation might have been a good word. Maybe not so much on Bucks, as others.

I admit to having bought that Frost junque off tv just to see what all was in it. I am betting that over half of that chinese junk was serrated.

I carry a bunch of them in the vehicles and have actually been surprised at how well the serrations do cut. No...not even gonna start on a deer with one..:thumbdn::D

When one of them goes dull, I just give it to someone. Usually the bro in law :D
He thinks I am a good guy!!

Serrations are another knife thing that is personal preference. No one is gonna change no ones mind one way or tother.

There are some on some 124's. Look for ya one of those :)

There was a movie about a guy that got trapped somewhere and had to cut his own arm off to keep from freezing to death.

He survived to tell the story.

Spose he wished he'd had a serrated 124.

I'm not sure I have the medical skills to survive that. Is bleeding to death better than freezing to death?

:D

I only own a couple,if going serrated,I like fully serrated. The one that sometimes rides in my vest is my Spyderco Rescue, great fully serrated VG10 Sheepsfoot blade.Spyderco has their serrations down.Like Sal says, they are matter separators. The blade says Rescue on it too,so it does'nt sound all para-military.

Serated blades are the biggest joke ever. I tried them years ago and found them worthless but with them being all the rage now I bought three different brands and put them to the test. They failed. They make even simple chores a pain in the rear, including cutting rope. With rope they hang baddly, while a good plain sharp edge zips right through. The serations also get int he way for most all survival task. I'll not own another for sure!

Never been a fan of serrated blades. IMO, a plain blade is good enough for the average bear. If you need to hack and slash through something, get yerself a handsaw. ;)

I have a few fully serrated and partly serrated knives, I tried them and do not like them at all.

Is it perhaps the "me too" syndrome at work here ?.

I had a half serrated 110. When I bought it several years ago I thought it was the coolest thing because before that I had never seen a 110 ith serration. Well after a few years I ended up removing the serration. I never could get the darn things shrp after dulling them. I'm not dead set against them but I owwn no knives with serrations. Seemed to me that they just got in my way and wasted alot of blade. But that was just me.

I have yet to warm up to the half serrated blade. I prefer one or the other. I like a fully serrated blade in a multiblade knife or tool like my favored SwissTool. I prefer straight regular edged knives. I stay away from the half serrated blades. I don't often cut large rope or anything that would require serrated. When I do, the SwissTool is there.

If people want a half serrated blade, why not offer it. As long as the regular blade is an option for me.

I love combo-edge knives. Yeah, they are ugly and not as easy to sharpen, but I find them very useful in the woods.
I ignorantly chose a combo-edge when I was young, but over the years, I became very accustomed to what it offers.
Using very little pressure I can easily saw through branches or saplings when making a fire or clearing a trail.
Serrations can also handle more abusive chores than a plain-edge, like sawing through a coax cable.

I wish more makers would offer combo-edges.
To each their own. :)
