does anyone else tie a fob on their knives?

Here are two sites that may help:

I use a scaffold knot. It looks alot better than the hangmans noose because both ends come out together. It seems to help me to roll the knot between my fingers to keep the loops from overlapping. I have actually gotten pretty good at it. Since I have been putting fobs on my knives, I have found that I like tip up. Tip up allows the fob to stick out of the pocket. Tip down and the fob is in the bottom of the pocket. I am going to experiment with different materials and colors for decoration.

Sure, Blades! When you start, place a marble between your pointer and middle finger. That will give you something to wrap the cord around. When you go from side to side, it should still be in the middle. The ball will remain in the knot even after it's finished. It will probably require somethine smaller than a marble. I personally have never made one small enough to use on knives, and my dad has never used anything on the inside to fill it up. I'll try to think of something. If you don't quite follow the tip, I'm sorry; I can't think a better way to explain it, but you're more than welcome to ask about it. I would suggest finding someone who might be familiar with it to show you; try a fisherman, or possibly an Eagle Scout or Scoutmaster. Hope this helps.

Or you could ask a Stagehand. Here is a good link to the Monkeys Fist.

I put a fob or lanyard on my BM720. I like tip up carry and it gives me something to grab onto to pull it out from under my belly.
haha

Go with the scaffold knot. About the best fob material I found has been the nylon (?) cord that is on the Tasco, Simmons, etc mini binoculars. Not too thin, strong, easy to tie, stays tight.

When I was a kid everybody had a "fob" on their pocket watch. Fishermen and people who worked on boats had "lanyards" on their knives and marlin spikes.

I have a few customers who like fobs a lot. I came up with the idea of using a small amber bead on the end of a doubled up deer skin strip, they seem to like it a lot better then anything else.

Dennis, I use one on a couple of knives, a Mike Irie and the Umfaan, more to retrieve the knife than actual use when cutting, plus they look nice too.

I posted a Fob making thingy over in the Shop Talk forum, here is the link, it shows how to braid one with deerskin.
