Does anyone get Backwoodsman Mag?

Add another to the fan list.

Often I'll find myself wanting to do something and think :Hey, wasn't there an article a few years ago. . .?"

I like it alright but. Its mostly vintage stuff with some modern articles from time to time. Only thing I dont like is the penny pincher/cheap skate theme that seems to prevail in some of the articles. I also wish they would do some better articles on modern WS&S knives/firearms/equipment and get away from the surplus/junk store/find at the dump stuff.

I think that's mainly due to the fact that the historical mountain man.backwoodsman was often very poor and had to DIY and do it on the cheap.

I'm going to try and publish a few articles in the future in BWM. They'll be of traditional gear, but mostly newly made, and how to do things in ways the typical American Backwoodsman isn't used to or hasn't been exposed to.

I have to thank Dan Schectman and one of his BWM articles that turned me onto Duluth Packs. I had been wanting a good canvas/leather packs for a long time and couldn't even find where to ask about one.

Another thing I like about the mag is that the letters section are often mini articles that are as informative as the main articles.

At the moment I sub to Fur-Fish-Game and Backwoods Home Magazine. I also get a few other rags on fishing, state game news, backpacking and bicycling. Due to funds (or lack there-of) I am knocking back to just three. I think the Backwoodsman will be one of those three.

Thanks for the replies!!

Right now it's the only magazine I'll subscribe to. Being in my 50's I can relate to alot of the articles. I also love the "frugal" way most of the writers look at life. Nowadays it's so easy to get caught up in buying the latest and "best" of everything, that we overlook the things we have that work just fine.

I've picked it up at the newsstand off and on for years. Charlie is a good guy too. He tries to present a wide variety of articles to appeal to his readership. Some miss my interest, but never the majority of any issue. I guess I really need to pass my back issues along to someone before long. I would hate for them to be trashed after I have shuffled off.

Great magazine. I enjoy the how-to articles, recipes, and history/fiction submissions most of all.

I buy it off the stand, I have been getting every one thats come out since i found it. I love the articles and really want to get the three magazines they offer in the back thats put together from a lot of the older editions of the magazine.

I pick them up every now & then when I see them & the articles look interesting. Great stuff in there from time to time.

I've been a subscriber for well over a decade....excellent magazine! And Colt6731, if you read it over a period of time, you'll find a whole gamut of articles, covering expensive equipment as well as the other. And remember, not everyone has your budget for equipment.
