Does anyone have a WWIII yet?

Hello all! I've been talking to Craig and I've got a chance to get an "unclaimed" WWWIII. What I'd like to know, is does anyone have theirs yet? What do you think of it? How big/heavy is it? What kind of blade finish should I go for? Thanks in advance to everyone who looks and this and a special thanks to all those that have already helped me!

Johan, the WWIII's are all still in the making--none have been completed yet. The first batch (of 6--I assume serial numbers 01-06) are having their handles put on and shaped now by Robert Couture, who goes by old_engineer on the forums here. Look for previous threads on the GH forum with "WWIII" somewhere in the subject heading. There are two sets of pictures posted on different threads showing the micarta handles. The first set of photos was the prototype, and the second set of photos (with the red background) shows Robert's latest design, which we all loved and agreed upon. That's the design he'll be using.

As for handles, you have some choices here. You can choose a dull, bead blasted micarta handle for a more positive grip and a more 'tactical' (GH Formites dread using that word, and avoid it whenever possible) appearance, or a smooth, probably shiny finish. Most of the WWIIIers are requesting blade finishes to match their handle finishes; ie, most guys who requested smooth finish handles want their blades left polished, and those of us who want bead blasted handles want dull, bead blasted blades to match, although all WWIII blades are to be hot-blued, regardless of finish.

You can also request (unless it's too late--check with Craig to make sure) either black, white, or olive green micarta. If you choose black micarta, and request bead blasted finish, the micarta will turn out looking more gray than black. If you choose olive green micarta, then your only finish option is bead blasted (at least as far as I know--again, check with Craig). The cool thing is, if you order olive green micarta handles, Craig will have Edgeworks make your sheath the same color to match. Craig calls the white handled ones the 'tuxedo' look.

Now for my personal bias: I understand why some prefer all-black; it looks very sleek and stealthy, definitely a sexy look (so to speak). Black is more intimidating; more sinister--why do you think SWAT & FBI HRT teams choose all-black? (They didn't choose it because it 'blends in well'; OD blends in with shadows as well if not better than black, and in someone's lit up yard OD is definitely better.) However, if you are in the service and you plan to carry your WWIII in the field attached to your LBE, or if you're a hunter and intend to carry it on your hunts or camping trips, I think olive green is the only way to go. Remember, nothing in the woods is black. Black is not a natural color to be found in the outdoors (at least not around here). Granted, on a relatively small object such as a knife, it probably won't matter much--I don't think it will 'give you away.' However, all the black colored gear you carry does add up to your overall picture, and if there aren't a lot of REALLY dark shadows around you, you're going to stand out, in my opinion. This can be good or bad, depending on what you want. If you're The Punisher or Mack Bolan, aka The Executioner (anybody remember him?), then black is the only way to go. If you're G.I. Joe, the Hulk, or Jaeger or me, olive is the best color match. And if you're James Bond, then the white handle 'tuxedo' look is the only real choice.

X-Head, thanks for the reply, it answered a lot of questions. I think I'll probably go with the shiney black handle and polished blade. I agree with what you said about the black showing up, but I'm not Frank Castle-yet

I plan to use it for general camp use, and while I agree the olive would be the most "natural" colour, it's also that much more likely for me to lose and never find for those very same reasons. Thanks a lot for all your help.

Johan, nothing wrong with that. The color choice is a very subjective issue and my personal biases are in no way the "right" answer or a better choice than anyone else's. I must admit, black is probably a more impressive and commanding color than OD.

Go for it man! There`s never been anything quite like the WWIII made before (that this big ol bunch of knife nuts knows of anyway). The concept was to combine the wonderful skill and tradition of the Nepalese kamis in the form of a zone hardened WWII profile blade with a full flat tang ,canvas micarta grip scales that embody a roughly traditional profile with modern ergonomics and a lanyard hole,a bead blasted blued blade for low glare and rust resistance, and finally a modern multi carry kydex sheath. The polished option and white grips were Craigs idea. I have to admit that even though it`s not what we originally had in mind that a khuk with a polished blued blade and white micarta grips would be pretty classy looking! X-head`s right it`s the only choice for tuxedo carry. I see the Punisher going for more of a giant black EDMF knuckle bowie than a khukuri but Bolan uses stuff from all over so I don`t think a WWIII would clash at all with the Automag and 93R (or whatever he`s using these days).

Marcus, glad to discover that someone else out there is familiar with The Executioner. I haven't been keeping up with him, but I believe he's been carrying a Desert Eagle in the new .50 Action Express round since the cover was blown on Stony Man Farm and he became a fugitive from the U.S. Government. (I think it was too hard or too tedious for him to gain access to the tools and reloading supplies to make those hybrid .44/.308 loads--especially on the run.) Anyway, I guess I am diverging far enough from the subject matter of this thread that I probably should put this on a new one.

Anyway, I would like to thank Craig for the willingness to see this project through, his everlasting patience with us and our changes, all the time he has invested in this project (no doubt way beyond what he originally anticipated), and his high standards in selecting only the best craftsmen in their fields for the handles, sheaths, etc. And thank you Marcus and Tallwingedgoat for the original idea/concept and for the name, respectively. And here's to Mr. Couture for somehow imparting a sleek, ergonomic, & super efficient design to the handles while still maintaining the traditional khukuri shape.

A big thanks to Craig goes out from me too! The WWIII is really gonna be something! I can`t really take credit for coming up with the idea. I`ve heard others mention similar concepts before,I just put the thoughts together in one ball and ran with it.

As for ol Mack,I haven`t read his books for years. The last one I read he kept doing really stupid things (forgetting to take the safety off on the Automag etc.!) so that was that. I hope the new ones are better! I read almost every one up to 1989 though. I still have #1!

Just recieved my first knife with a Black electrical grade "Linen"(LE) Micarta handle. Am really impressed with how the handel feels and looks. The knife is a Newt Livesay Custom Air Assualt and can highely recommend this blade http://members.tripod.com/~Newt_Livesay/mdl131Air_Assault.html

If the handle on the WWIII is as good as I think it will be the WWIII is bound to be one of my prized knives, hopefully it won't be to good and end up in a glass display case
