I found some great Chitlangi photos on Zvi's (a.k.a. Alligator) website:
http://www.zvis.com/knives/imgidx/himpidx/fixhimpcht.shtml

I've yet to find a detailed photo of the Sword of Shiva... I cropped one of the photos on Zvi's website, and it shows off the Sword of Shiva clearer that I ever saw it before. It the area with the hammered in brass depicting feathers?

If anyone can link me to an extreme detail photo, showing what is contained in the 2nd photo cropping, or submit one, I'd very much appreciate it. If you can't post, you can e-mail it to me, and I'll post if for you.

Thanks!

i have a few i just took, but verizon doesnt allow people to access their web space at night . so i have to wait until they let me get on to upload and post them. beware though, they are massive (slight crops from 8mp camera (sony f828) taken from about 1" away from the area.)

the first two pictures are of the area near the bend of a 20" sirupati by khumar. its amost perfectly flat with the rest of the blade steel, and the symetry of the design is impressive.

the next 2 are of the same blade, but near the handle. the brass has a little bit more of an indentration into the metal then the area near the crook, and two of the stamps were iether made with out metal, or the brass was chipped out at some point.

the bottom 3 are of a 12" sirupati by amtrak. note that it has a much deeper indentarion then kumars. i have a few other examples, but these were the most even of the designs.

Thanks, Seth. Outstanding and large (!) photos -- just what i wanted. Where did you get that "icepick/bottle opener"? Great photos on the site...

its a busse combat nuclear ice pick, limited run for the first week before blade east, and they had a bunch available for blade. they sold for 67$ i beleive it was.... theres currently one up on ebay , though i have seen 2 others go for sale so far. good stuff, my dedicated prybar.

If it's made by Busse, I'd expect it to be extremely tough. Nice design; I thought it was something you personally made. :D Thanks!

I think there's a hand-drawing floating around here somewhere. Try a search on this forum for shiva.

A lot of the photos and attachments,if not all, came up with a nice red X... I might have come to the right post, but passed over it. If you know any other sources, kindly let me know.

yikes! the eye that never blinks!.....never looks away!.......aayyeeeeeeeeee!???!!

I'll look for a sketch, Drdan

Here is a nice looking pwankh on an old regimental kukri. I still cannot find any early reference to the term Sword of Shiva. Aunlo , pwankh and rato karangh are the only words I have seen and even those need interpretation beyond finger, feather, red lines, etc.

Thanks, John!

What can I say? Gorgeous blade, precise and expertly engraved designs, including a Sword of Shiva variant of sorts... What a Cho (or chos); the craftsman was definitely showing off his skill here! "Feather" would accurately describe the areas on the H.I.'s Chitlangi where the brass is hammered in...

I very much like some of the present H.I. models for both looks and function, but I am probably a "Kothimoda person at heart:" ;)

Best wishes, John, and thanks for your continued interest in H.I.'s forum, and us beginners.

P.S. Do give us some news about your book; you have a copy definitely sold here!

News on the book posted as a separate thread and a chance to look at some cover ideas. Guess trying to have you call a pwankh a pwankh instead of Sword of Shiva is like tilting against windmills. It's almost as difficult to have everyone start calling the cho a kauri which is actually the word used more by Nepalis.

haven't found any sketches yet, Drdan....:(

maybe some of the ole timers know?

I'm sure an engraver with the blade in hand will be able to draw a very detailed rendition of the Sword of Shiva. I still can't make out the areas filled in with brass on the Chitlangi. Perhaps feathers were meant to be depicted. The engraver will most assuredly remove the brass, and study the entire engraved area.

I've noticed that the Sword of Shiva differs a bit on the various H.I. models; I personally like the Chitlangi's version. Gorgeous...

Waiting to hear from Tom; all else looks go. Your expertise will be invaluable as far as advising me on the buttcap thickness, etc. The latest e-mail is pretty ballpark. ;)

P.S. I'll ask the engraver to draw out a nice Chitlangi Sword of Shiva, and post it on the forum.

Here is the sword of Shiva on me YCS. Not real fancy, buy the inlay work is very nice! :D

Several of the H.I. khukuris come with the Sword of Shiva, and the design itself differs depending on the model in question. All are quite nice, and I think that its simplicity makes it so attractive in the first place.

I'm still puzzled as to what the Chitlangi's Sword of Shiva areas inlaid with brass are depicting... The YCS's inlaid areas look like arrows or lightning bolts to me. Thanks for the photo, AA!
