Out of just plain curiosity does anyone who posts here still trap game for the
fur? And if you do how long have you been doing it for?

And do you think it could be a valid survival technique in an emergency?

i have been trapping for the last 12 years for beaver, coyotes, bobcats, coon, skunk, and now that i am in arkansas mink is on the list.
i have often told my wife,"don't worry we can always eat beaver meat."
the fur is not worth much unless you tan it and sell it, except for bobcat and otter which go for around 50 - 100 bucks.
for survival get some info on snaring, you can snare any of the animals i metioned. i have only eaten bobcat and beaver both of which are quite good, but if i was a "starvin' pilgrim" i could choke down a coon or 'possum.

My questionis not so much about the money to made more if the traditon
is still around amongst folks on the forum.

Do you for instance read Fur Fish and Game? Are the prices accurate in the
back of the magazine or are they more the highest price paid not what you
are likely to get at the market?

I can make a snare but as far using it.....well pilgrim would fit rather well
when it comes to that.

How did you cook the Bobcat? I have enver heard of bobcat being eaten
before. Cool

haha, I know a beaver trapper, every time we have a pot luck he brings beaver meat. Good stuff if you know what you are doing!

I trap here in iowa, been doing it most of my life something like 25 years or so, I've went to mostly snares.I didn't get really into trapping until after I got into survival.trapping is the only thing that will keep meat on table, hunting takes alot of energy and time but traps are working all the time without you there so that you can be doing other things. All the animals you trap are good to eat some better than others.Anything that I don't eat I cook and feed to the dogs so everything gets used.If you get into trapping to make alot of money then you might not like it, I sell or use everthing that I catch but sometimes you don't make much for all the work and if you plan on driveing a trapline then your going to have a hard time makeing much.I like walking my trapline but I also live were I can start just out the back door and when out trapping I have my 22 rifle to shot rabbits and other game for the table. But anyway I think trapping is the best way of feeding yourself and have a gun to get the game you see when out.

cooking bobcat: cut backstrap into cubes, cook on low with butter garlic salt and black pepper.

i do not read ffg mag anymore, same stuff year after year, same pics too.

i stick with the american trapper, trapper and predator caller, and trappers world.

trapping is like a non-curable disease once you start you get infected and can't stop.

The "sportsman's licence" in NC allows trapping hunting and fishing all for
the same price. so I looked into trapping but the winters have just been
to warm here to even bother with it.

But the gill net at Buckshot's camp is really interesting.

And that bobcat recipe is interesting to say the least, I had heard that mink
was stringy.....

I used to trap in NY.. the usuals, coons, beaver, etc..

But here in Florida, about the only thing worth trapping is gator, which is Yummy.

I just posted slot of trapping information and suvival giudance, for you to use inyour quest to becoming a trapper. I have trapped for 35 years and listed many different ways to track/ trap animals and how to do it in a leagal way so you wouldhave an experiance that you could use to help you live in the woods if in a real emergancey. That's all I'm 43 years old and new to the net. I have nothing to offer anyone but my lifes experiance. I don' want to get in any truoble on this site I don't have many friend exept my sons. So Mr.N, you have trapped for 35 yrs? What was your best season?

And what do you trap for mostly? Ever trap any fox? I had a buddy who used
to run foxes and he was from Indiana (a co-worker).

I still snare rabbits for the table but no pelt trapping.

Anything bigger gets shot.

Skam

My father trapped for most of his young adult life with snares and spring traps. I do some for rabbit and squirrel for the hell of it and now and again for muskrat and beaver at the family farm, but the area I live in isnt real conducive to trapping so backyarding it for lil guys is the most I can do. Fun though especially wakin up and i gots me a fresh bunny for my beagle to chase...

I just read my e-mail from the last few days so now I am a little more clued
in. I think you may have misread my intentions I was nowhere near offended
over anything that you posted. Anyway...

Did you ever use the box "live traps"? Or just the snares and leg hold traps?

My father used to trap all his life while he was younger but then as the area he lived in got more and more populated he couldnt do it anymore. Me and him used to go trapping about 5 times a winter but now we have to go about 2 hours upstate and its hard so i havent been in a couple of years but ive always loved it. My father used to be a fanatic and has probably over 1000 trap

On one of my last wilderness survival courses, I made several figure-four deadfall traps. I had ground squirrel for dinner that night
