Does anyone here still trap?

Any trap that works is a gooood trap.

Two questions Myakka,

1. What was the bait that you used?
2. did you use your wsk to make the figure four set, or did you use a smaller
blade?

fixer27,

For bait I used ground up seeds and nuts mixed with water to form a paste.

As for the knife, no I didnt use my WSK. During my week along trip I only brought one knife (shame on me) and it only had a 4" blade, and its did everything. Carved a fireboard, made a spindle & bow, made numerous traps, split firewood with a baton, harvested plants for food and cordage, and cleaned and skined a squirrel.

One knife? what kind of knife nut are you...... :D R Linger does make some
really nice and functional blades. He made that custom WSK and that was
done rather well.

But seriously though, did you put out any snares at the same time as you did
the figure four traps?

On that trip I only set out 4 figure-four dead falls. I have used snares, but havn't had as luck with them. Here are a few snares tied to a bent tree branch.

Here is the trigger assembly:

Here is the set (armed) snare:

Great pics Myakka!

are the twiggs on the snare just there to elevate the snare and not to be
the triggers? And how is the critter supposed to fit through the snare with
all of the stuff behind the snare?

Yes the twiggs just hold the snare in the position you want it at, the ideal spot in along a run.

I've been "told" that a SureKill with a chunk of liver stuck on the trigger and placed in about 3 ft. of local creek will get good results with catfish.

The "sportsman's licence" in NC allows trapping hunting and fishing all for
the same price. so I looked into trapping but the winters have just been
to warm here to even bother with it.

But the gill net at Buckshot's camp is really interesting.

And that bobcat recipe is interesting to say the least, I had heard that mink
was stringy.....

Can you get this licence in canada?

...don't worry we can always eat beaver meat...
Yep, nothing like some wild beaver to keep your energey up:D

That trap looks great. Is it difficult to ensure they work well?

I've trapped for much of the last 30 years or so. Some traps could be very beneficial in a wilderness survival situation; but I'd probably lean towards snares just due to the weight.

Probably the best trapping website I've seen so far is www.trapperman.com.

Oh yeah... Starlight: My understanding is that even California still allows trapping in some form. In most states, it isn't that big a deal (permit and habitat stamp). You're right though about roadkills! :D

Has anyone sold any furs for some money? The season is young yet (dec jan
feb) are the prime trapping season.

So has anyone sold a pelt for cash as of yet?

What to you do with a live skunk in your trap or snare? Is it possible to kill a skunk without it spraying on you?

A friend of mine shoots them with a 22. Sold the skunks the support his trapping habit.:D

sorry to hijack the thread, but seems like a good place for the question: anyone HUNT beaver? i don't want to trap, but beaver hunting is all that's available in march and april (legally) in these parts...i know very little about these critters - do they spend much time on land where i can get a good, clean shot? i wouldn't shoot them in the water - no good way to retrieve them...

Living in N.Y. I am so out of touch with what you people are talking about it boggles the mind. The only Beaver I trap has lips on it.:D

All beavers have lips on them.....wait a minute......:D

There is a some trapping done in upstate NY, it would seem like it would be a
good area for it along the Canadian border.
