Does anybody carry a switchblade or other illegal knife for edc and just keep to yourself and make sure you don't get caught?

And announcing it on a public forum would be beneficial, because?

I also am curious about this but I'm not sure how many people are going to openly admit on the interwebz.

Grand pappy gave me a nice Microtech years ago and I can't carry it because of state laws but I really really wish I could.

A walk on the wild side is not advisable for a number of reasons.
The illegality being the big one. ;)

Most likely he's just looking for encouragement of others who carry autos or butterflies and get away with it so he feels secure doing it himself. To be honest I wouldn't mind hearing what others think about the matter, not necessarily admitting whether they do or not but at least post their views and opinions on the subject.

It's not worth it to me. Wouldn't take much on the legal side to cause me to loose my good job, crush my life long earning potential, and put my family in a tight spot.

Current and future employers, when they see a "deadly weapon" charge or whatever it's called in your state, are going to drop you like a brick. They aren't going to take the time to hear you explain yourself since there are a line of people who want your job and have better judgement.

When I was a younger man I may have done it, but not now. Too much to lose over a knife that may open a millisecond faster than the legal option.

I wouldn't risk it with an auto or balisong though I do walk the line with blade length sometimes.

I knew one guy several years ago who carried a cheap auto insurance a sheath on his side here in Washington, he used it regularly in his work laying carpet. He said he had never had any problems with the police....but that was a long while back when they weren't being trained to be oppressive as today.

My advice.....move to a state that allows carry of autos. Till then carry a flipper with assist, nearly as fast and easy to open without the legal consequences.

Folks do stuff like that all the time (carrying illegally) but one day they get pulled over for some minor thing.....and wind up with a major headache and a legal legacy.

Stick within the law...and work to change it.

I used to carry a cheapo Bali for maby 6 months untill I got pulled over with it on me. I just said no to the weapons question and quit carrying it.

For a while there i was edcing a hackman Finland bali. As I got a bit older I thought about the hassle that would come with getting caught with it by the police. It wasn't just for the cool factor though, I think that knife has a very useable blade profile and the handles made it light and durable.

I hope the laws change concerning autos and balis, it really doesn't matter how the knife opens; all the matters is who has the knife and what they intend to use it for.

I'd love to get some sort of interest going in changing the laws regarding knives in my state but it doesn't seem like enough people are motivated to actually do anything about it or that any politicians would care with all the other topics they are supporting or fighting.

what i think is messed up is, shouldn't we at least be able to get some kind of authorization to carry it, we can carry guns around, but not a knife that opens itself?

Gentlemen...contact kniferights.Org, they may have some advice on how to initiate action to get the laws changed.

The switchboard laws are all kneejerk reaction to the Westside story movie of the 50's.

Several states have overturned the laws after grassroots efforts or legal challenges.

Lots of people do.
Some of them go to jail.
The luckier ones just get their knife confiscated.

Don't be that guy.;)

In my city, Myrtle Beach SC. Any locking blade is technically illegal. That means almost everyone in this forum would be carrying something illegal. But the issue of legality really boils down to what you are doing with it. If you just have it clipped in your pocket then no cop is gonna say FREEZE. But if you are waving it around and drawing attention to yourself then it could give them cause to question you. Now they could use it to inquire about you if you are doing other stupid/illegal or suspicious things. But I regularly carry locking folders, bali's, and otf's without so much as a glance. Am I gonna get in trouble for just that? no. If I do other things that draw negative police attention to me then they may become an issue.

I've questioned cops out of curiosity. All have said that as long sas your not acting an ass using it, they don't care. They feel same as we do, you can carry a gun but not a little knife with a spring? But, there is always that one that can be an ass, or looking to tack on more cause he don't like your attitude. You won't get told to stop cause they see a pocket clip. I venture to say any cop that see a microtech clip and recognizes it is a enthusiast like you. But is it a chance your willing tot" take?

There are things you can do if you wish to chance it. Keep it hidden. Don't flaunt it around. If you get pulled over, drop it into your console etc (and that's just a seconds thought about it).

You need to accept, that if you get caught, you'll have to pay the fine or deal with whatever sanction/punishment your statelaws prescribe. If you can do that, then feel free to carry what you want. Don't come complaining, when you get busted though.

In essence: Don't do the crime, if you can't do the time. Plus you'll lose your knife.

Never my autos. I do occasionally cross the line with the length. The "legal" length in CO is 3.5" and I believe my Endura is a little longer. I don't usually find myself in situations where I would ever be searched, however, the last time I was pulled over when I had my Endura I presented two IDs (my driver license and my CCW). Just by doing that, the officer assumed I had a "weapon" in the car. Smoke and mirrors....
