Does anyone know how to "wipe" a computer?

Still workin' on it. I hate flippin' computers. My new "friend" is telling me to take it to the Best Buy next door and let the geek squad work on it. I think she hit the nail on the head. I found myself a winner. :D

:(

Sorry to hear it. Like I said earlier, too bad you don't live closer. Simply reinstalling an OS from scratch, I usually ask a 6-pack for that. Actually doing the work to remove a virus and preserve the existing installed operating system and software, that's two six-packs.

Was there a particular brick wall you hit trying to do it yourself? Or just an overall feeling of being overwhelmed?

Just too busy, my friend. Trying to scare up a first date, watching football, runnin' through some emotions, those sorts of things. The girl I ended up asking out suggested I take it to Best Buy. Now I'm doin' the face palm because they just opened up a few weeks ago an 1/4 of a mile away. Thanks for the effort. I'll let you know. bhyde was very helpfu,l as were the most of the rest of you. Thank you all. By the way, she said yes. -DT

You have my number..Don't hesitate to call to get it working. My profile may say modelmaker/toolmaker...but I also do tech support for high end CAD workstations/software hardware for my department. Unfortunately,..My hours for this would be after 5:00 pm MST due to my regular job. Glad to help out anyone in the community that I am able to :)

bhyde - no worries, thank you very much for all of you're help. This silly computer is designed for CAD work. My fault for using it for ... other things. :D You Da Man.

I'll +1 Avast anti-virus for when you get everything back to green. I use it on my crappy dell tower running XP and have never had a single problem other than it thinking that Spybot S&D was a malicious program. Spybot is another good freeware but you've got to keep it updated or it's worthless.
Given your decision to take it to Geek Squad, the one real piece of advice I can offer you is to ask LOTS of questions. When you're dropping off and picking up your laptop, pick their brains about anything and everything. Ask about safe data storage, removable media, firewall settings, how they have their home computers set up, etc. Most geeks I know are more than happy to launch into detailed explanations of how they set up computers and you can learn a lot if you can stay awake.
;)

1. Turn off Dell.

2. Turn on Dell.

3. As soon as "Dell" pops up on screen, hit Ctrl F11.

4. Follow the simple step-by-step instructions.

5. Windows will reinstall and you just saved $199 that Geek Squad would've demanded for doing the same thing.

This will wipe every bit of data you saved on your hard drive, resetting it to factory settings, so back up your tunes and pron on a flash drive before the wipe. ;)

When you finish re-installing the OS you should try download a free program called "MalwareBytes", whenever I get a bad Virus, the first thing that goes down is Mcafee and it becomes completely useless, it helped me remove a few nasty viruses a few times when Mcafee could not, also I don't get "false negative" viruses which Norton and Mcafee gets.
