Does anyone know what is the use for the reamer with eye on SAKs?

By the way, while we're on the topic of Victorinox SAK's, does anyone know if the ballpoint pen that comes with some models is refillable or replaceable?

I believe the hook "thingy" was designed for the European market. Apparently tying packages with string is a common practice there.

Uhm, not really.

Many of the shops that sell SAKs have replacement parts including the pen. It's seems when I replaced mine it cost $1 and tax. They also have the tweezers, toothpicks, springs for the sissors and such.

On their website they show it being used for opening a can's pop top. But, I remember an old literature that said it was designed for helping people lace up their boots. Insert hook, pull, take up slack....

The hook on my Vnox Tinker is very useful for quickly tightening and loosening my boot laces on long hikes. Nice to make quick adjustments when moving over uneven terrain, carrying a fairly heavy pack, and/ or my feet get wet.

Besides the uses for the reamer/ awl noted above, perhaps the niftiest one I learned on this forum is for hollowing out a piece of branch to make a whistle, courtesy of Buzzbait, here: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=200263

Also, for extra pens and the like, two sites to check out are:

I read that some people use the hook on a sak to lift (camping) pots by its wire handle when its too hot to handle by bare hand.

This sounds pretty goofy but last week I had to walk the mile to the nearest Schnucks to pick up the weeks groceries. While walking back with 6 full bags, my fingers started getting sore so I put 3 bag handles onto the hook and carried my stuff home switching hands every few minutes.

I like the hook idea for package carry.
I've used mine to pull springs (watch the comments :) ) onto the seating area
