Does anyone know what these black spots on my hatchet are?

Trying to figure out what these spots are to figure out how to clean them off the hatchet if possible

Magnetite, Just another form of good 'ol iron oxide. It can be removed by mechanical abrasion or chemical reaction.

Sharpen it and use it. Its a good tool.--KV

Yeah, it's developing character. There was time when that sort of thing would bother me and I would waste a lot of time trying to get it off, only to reappear after time and use. But now I find it beautiful. Keep it sharp and free of red oxide. Let that black stuff develop.
