It's a Estwing hatchet my cousin gave me about a 3 years ago

Magnetite, Just another form of good 'ol iron oxide. It can be removed by mechanical abrasion or chemical reaction.

Sharpen it and use it. Its a good tool.--KV

Yeah, it's developing character. There was time when that sort of thing would bother me and I would waste a lot of time trying to get it off, only to reappear after time and use. But now I find it beautiful. Keep it sharp and free of red oxide. Let that black stuff develop.
