Does anyone like Gerber?

I noticed a complete lack of anything gerber on these forums and wondered if there's something I don't know. I realize a lot of their stuff is cheap and made in china but they have just as many solid knives, agree? Disagree?

Pick and choose when it comes to Gerber. The U.S. made stuff is good. I have an Applegate Combat Folder, it's well-built, solid, large and comforting to know it's in my bugout bag.

Best,

My first solid quality knife that I carried for well over 20 years was a Gerber Magnum LST. Great knife, mediocre steel, but really what did I know ? It just seems to me Gerber hasn't been good since Fiskars bought them out. There's just much better brands for the money, plain and simple.

I have the lmf 2 and its awesome, my buddy got the prodigy and I wasn't impressed. I like the silver trident, phrase, and mostly their fixed blades as long as they state the steel.

My son received a Gerber machete for Christmas and although we have not had a chance to try it out, it was dull and unimpressive out of the package.

Agreed.

The large Combat folder is one of the better Gerber's. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one.

Longtime Gerber fan. Its just that there is so much better now. And/or I just know better now. Anyhow, I still like Gerber

In the old days..they were awesome. Not so much now.
I want to try the new S30V stuff.

Their older stuff from many years ago was good quality, but their recent knives I don't care for.

The only newer things they have that I'd like to try are the Freeman series is S30V (always liked the design) and maybe the Metolius series in D2. I have heard decent things about the Gator fixed blades too. I'd like to play with one of the Bell & Carlson Series Gators.

I have to say that the Gator folders have always been good knives for me, but I've only had the older ones that were 440A.

The magnum LST I have since the 80's has done a lot of work and is still solid and takes a great edge. The fact they won't even say what steel is on a knife now keeps me from buying another one.

I liked the profile fixed as a pattern, but they won't even say what kind of steel it's made out of or what the heat treat is.

as stated above pick and choose, they make some excellent stuff at all price points, alot of gerber bashing on here, some deserved some just dog piling.
I have and would recommend the following...
Gerber Freeman Folder
Hinderer Firefighter knife
Mini Fast Draw
profile fixedblade
evo jr
the freeman and the hinderer were above $40 the rest were really affordable.
They do make some garbage but then again so do some other manufacurers too.
if you like it and use it, then it's a keeper regardless of manufacturer, etc.
regards

The only gerber Ive liked in the past 5 years or so is the freeman folder. Its a solid knife for under 50 bucks and very attractive looking. I lost mine on the shores of lake cumberland and was hiking in the same area a year or so later and found it. Very little rust and I still use it to this day :D Not too big on their other stuff though.

Bonus, the little rust makes the story better.

Gerber makes some good middle of the road knives. Not fantastic but far from terrible, the mystery steel they use in most of the knives they make turns some people off, but the way I look at it is even though it isn't the newest, latest and greatest super steel, it still gets very sharp, holds its edge well enough for what it is, and its easy to sharpen. Also Gerber's CS is the best I have ever dealt with, prompt, helpful, and friendly, and their lifetime warranty is a great no questions asked affair with wonderful turn around time, they really stand behind their products.

The LST, LST Jr, LST Magnum, LST Magnum Jr., and the S30V Bell & Carlson Gator fixed blade made for the big outfitter are all great knives.

I've been using my Gerber Multi-tool for probably 15 years and the LST Mag Jr. has seen more than its share of use and abuse.

I've got no problem with their US made stuff.

kingsqueak, The LST line used to be advertised as 420HC.

I don't have much experience with newer Gerber products, other than a cheap multi-tool that fell apart at work last week.

But yeah, I have accumulated some Gerber stuff over the years that appears to be well-made, namely a Gator and EZ-Out from the 1990s. And I'm a huge fan of the Silver Knight series, made in Japan for Gerber, perhaps the highest quality products to ever carry the Gerber name.
