Why doesnt anyone make a nice little machine for cutting serrations? From time to time I get customers that want partially serrated blades. It seems like it wouldnt be very hard for someone to make and sell something that would do it easily... Does anyone have a home-made setup out there? I would appreciate any insight on this subject greatly...

Thanks in Advance

Trace,

I know a guy who has a diamond impregnated wheel that he mounted on his buffer. I asked about the price. Needless to say, I almost choked. Sorry, but I don't know where to get them.

It's my understanding they are usually cut with a shaped diamond wheel. The price I heard was in the $400-500 range, but I'm not aware of who makes them. I believe I heard this from Bud Nealy a couple years ago; you might want to check with him. Most likely it is one of the companies that make diamond wheels for the lapidary trade.

Quite likely, one of the folder factories who use them could probably tell you. Call Sal Glasser at Spyderco and see what happens.

Good luck with it.

Hello Trace,

About three months ago I asked a freind in the abravsive business about a serrating machine. He told me that a large company that he works with had such a machine but it cost to much for the average knifemaker to own. He said that I could use a diamond wheel with the profile I wanted. The jig would be of made of carbide to shape the profile and use it to dress the wheel when needed. If this sounds like the way you might want to try to make serrations, drop me a E-mail.

yes, several people make a diamond coated wheel that you can put on a buffer, slow speed is recommended.....ken onion has one, he got his from some guy in new england or maybe its penn who sells knives and stuff, you could email him and find out...but I was inquiring about this a while back and one of the guys on knifeforums told me where i could get one for considerably cheaper but i have no idea who or where....kens model is around 700, the other one was under 500, they last for quite a while. my diamond wheel supplier said he could coat one for about 150 if i supplied the aluminum wheel.. it needs to be a mirror image of what you want ....btw, kens is one inch wide and is the same wheel that spyderco uses, but im sure they have a much more sophisticated system than a bench grinder.
