Does Anyone Prefer Combo Edge?

for me it really depends on the knife. some models look better to me in combo edge, some look horrible with it.

one of my recent purchases was a black emerson cqc 8, for some reason i just liked the way the combo edge looked on this knife more than the plain edge so i went with the combo edge. also i felt the design and length of the knife gave me enough plain edge.

Ya but this is a prime example of two knife carry. I would carry a Spyderco H1 serrated hawkbill in one pocket and my EDC in the other. No need for combo

I usually have an interlude between work and chillin' where I can exchange blades, so I just switch it up then.

Man, I went on a carry tear a couple of years back where I had a Leatherman Charge clipped rfp, a Vic Climber and keys and change loose in rfp, a Spyderco Military brp (beside wallet), phone lfp. I was so loaded down and started to feel like I had ridiculous purse pockets. Now I carry a blade, a phone, keys, wallet. The knife does everything that needs to be done with a tool and, miraculously, the lack of dedicated tools has not made me die yet :D.

To each his own, though.

I use to go crazy over CE about two years ago, but now i would generally prefer PE due to the fact that im starting to teat the waters of the super steels (dont got much money :( ). In relation to that, i wish i would have got my 551 grip in PE instead of CE because if i really dull the serrations im going to be occupied for a while sharpening them :grumpy: i have a smiths 3-in-1. For a woods knife i personally would want to have at least 1 CE knife with me. I still have and use CE knives but in general i would tend to buy and use PE knives more often for purely ease of sharpening (i wont have to sharpen two different sections.) I use to be a hardcore CE guy. As above mentioned, in my previous retail job; if a customer didn't know how to sharpen a knife i would point them in the CE direction unless i there was a better option in my glass case, generally there was. Random info: i had a Vietnam vet that bought a gerber BG folding sheath knife and ground off the serrations, made his own recurve of that knife.

Not now, but at one point in my life I did prefer the combo edge for work. I used to manage a climbing gym back in the day (late 90's), and we cut a ton of rope every day. I used a first gen Spyderco Pro-Grip with a 2/3 serrated edge (and I still have it). Here's the knife if you're not familiar with this model:

These days, there's no need for serrations, so I only carry plain edges.

Byrd Cara Cara 2 love it. Cheap 8cr13mov steel only serrated edges and combos can out cut my opinel for thick garden vines.

The Cara Cara 2 and trapper out sliced this even...

It has its uses I find that it's almost purpose built for tough rough cuts, gardening, pruning and general house utility tasks.

For cardboard and fast rough cuts the Cara Cara 2 out sliced sage 1, UKPK and a delica.

I'll always have one around myself.

I have never carried a combo or serrated knife.
Actually I don't knowing anyone who does or remember seeing anyone who does...

I'm not seeing the advantage for a CE in my day to day routine.
I would go as far to say I avoid them; as none in my collection currently have a combo edge.

I prefer PE knives but I do own some CE blades. A Benchmade 551that I bought used ($20) and a Gerber LST both come to mind. I also own a SOG rescue knife and a cheap throw away from china. I can see a need for one at times but it is not my thing.

A friend of mine is a fireman and he swears up and down by a CE. He also will not normally carry a liner lock at work.

I've had combo edged knives before. I'd rather have a full serrated than a combo. Yes, serrated does rope, fabric, seat belts, etc. much more efficiently. One thing, though, if you buy/sell/trade a lot, you may have a terrible time trying to sell a combo edge on the Exchange here. Nobody wants 'em.

I have 3 or 4 Combo edged knives that I bought on impulse over the years.

I do not like them.

I now only buy and carry plain edged knives.

However there are people that really like them.

Cheers.

I like them provided the serrations are done well. I don't exactly prefer them, and I strongly dislike anything close to half and half. Had a gerber once with razor sharp serrations that went through rope like butter.

That said knives kept in razor sharp condition will cut rope just as easily.

I hate combo edges. I'm not really crazy about serrated edges on anything but a bread knife. If I needed a serrated edge for some reason, I would get a knife with a fully serrated blade and carry it as a secondary knife. Serrated edges are a royal pain to sharpen properly.

I have a bench made presidio (spelling sucks) that is combo edge and it's ok, only reason I bought a combo edge is that it's all the px carried (combo edge knives) besides a 50th anniversary buck 110 (I did get that one to) back to the original question, it works decently, but I wish that it was switched, as in serrated portion at the tip and plain at the base.

If you like it just buy it (or simaler cheaper model for comparison) and see how it goes for you

Combo edge is a deal breaker for me.

Good at lots of things but not great at anything. Also a bitch to sharpen and rough on strops

I like a good combo edge for a general use beater knife.
I was carrying a CE Stretch until I lost it likkered up riding a gator through a swamp a couple of weeks ago. Pissed me off a little bit but I'll grab another.

...but I wish that it was switched, as in serrated portion at the tip and plain at the base.

Victorinox One Hand Trekker is the answer to this question. As well as some other Victorinox SAKs (the big ones). I own two like this. The Soldier (OHT with green bimaterial scales and oval blade hole) and a Rescue Tool (Yellow, glow in the dark scales). They serve their purpose just right and the somewhat softer steel sharpens easily on the Sharpmaker.
