Does anyone think Walmart will carry the new Delica?

I think I read on the Spyderco forum that Wal Mart does not want to carry 2 similar sized plastic handled knives from the same company. They already carry the Native.

I was shocked to see a Spyderco knife in walmart. I was excited because I thought to myself "Walmart will be carrying spyderco now! Alright!" which is an excuse for me to buy more knives because of the convenience.

I looked at the Native and was completely unimpressed. It was completely uncomfortable in the hand, and it was awkward to open. At this point, another thought popped into my head.

"This is the shittiest spyderco out there and spyderco knows it....so they sent it to walmart to get it pushed"

I am surprised that Walmart doesn't carry the Byrd line instead. They're cheap (I saw Crow for $17.95 somewhere on the net), they look sharp, and they're black. I even heard some good opinions about them. I'm not sure where they're made, though.

I don't understand why they bother at all.. pick up the Spyderco brand or don't.. but ONE knife? Come on.

I doubt they will sell the new Delica. They didn't sell the old one. Not at my Wal-Mart anyways.

byrd's are made in china. IIRC wallyworld was interested in the Native because it is made in the US of A.

Walmart markets to the masses, not to knife enthusiasts. Walmart is also hell on getting the absolutely lowest price from its suppliers, Spyderco will have a limited profit. It wouldn't surprise me to see a Spyderco knife made in China under license exclusively for Walmart, using top-of-the-line high carbon 420J2 steel for the blade. Why use VG-10 when the masses won't know the difference? :barf:

Are there plans to get more Spydercos in Walmart?

Thanks

Chris

We don't have any plans at this time to place any other models in Wal-Mart.

Close, but not quite... In discussing why we chose the Native, it was because it's a model that we feel strongly about and believe in even though it had relatively slow sales. The slow sales were due to many of our Dealers not wanting to carry an FRN model similar to the Delica. Wal-Mart had no preference or concerns of this nature.

nozh,
Sorry you were not impressed that the Native didn't fit your preferences, however, we stand behind it and further more believe in the Native. We build the Native here, so we didn't have a stockpile of these, we didn't have a "need" to get it pushed. If we felt poorly about the Native, we simply wouldn't make it anymore.

Our intentions originally were to show and place the byrd line in Wal-Mart, they however were very specific about what they wanted and were emphatic that the product be USA made.

Keep in mind, it's not just up to Wal-Mart, it's up to us too. We didn't have, and still don't have, any desire to place the full line or even multiple models there. It was and still is about introducing Spyderco to a new market, a customer that isn't familiar with our products. We have in fact had the result that we were after, people unfamiliar with Spyderco - purchasing a Native - seeking out other Spyderco products from our Dealers.

Sal has said it before, but it deserves repeating... we work for the ELU not Wal-Mart. We're still the same Spyderco. From the beginning, we did not want to change our quality to introduce a knife to the Wal-Mart customer but rather introduce a Wal-Mart customer to Spyderco quality. This hasn't changed. Other than the ELU, no one outside of Spyderco has a say in how Spyderco does anything. We're Spyderco and we're proud of it.

Thanks Kristi, my tongue was firmly in my cheek. It was a comment on Wal-Mart marketing, not meant to be derogatory to Spyderco. Best regards.

Intuitively, that was what I expected. To me that was a fit.

And see, that doesn't compute to me. Doesn't Walmart have a rule that everything they sell must be Made in China? ;)

I just got back from a walmart visit. I noticed something interesting.

Gerber has a new gator and it looks a bit similar to a Spyderco. Maybe placing Spyderco next to some gerbers customers could see something a bit nicer??

btw, Walmart sells the delica on-line, but it is not the new one.

It would sell better if it was positioned higher in the planogram. You have to really be looking for it to find it.

Yes, each Wal-Mart store (online functions as if it were one store location) has a discretionary budget. Their management can bring in things not there already by Wal-Mart corporate, but they don't purchase directly through Spyderco. Any item other than the C41PBK Native is being purchased through a Distributor.

And these two sentences are exactly why the majority of your first time customers become repeat customers.

Nicely said Kristi.

I am sorry that you feel this way. Native @ Wal-Mart is $40 only, with S30V blade steel. I have a few Spydercos, BMs and Kershaws with a price tag over $100 and $40 Native still one of my favorites: very comfortable in my hand, light, easy to open, great edge retention, very sharp, it slices cardboard box like water. Made in US.
Great knife. I wish it would be more knives like Native.

A few months ago there was a thread about EDC rotations, collections or something like that. It was very interesting to note that all but a very few of the people responding owned a Native. It was mentioned much more than any other single knife model. That in itself is a seal of approval from a group of knife nuts. I have used/abused one of the original Natives for years now, and it remains the one I reach for when going out gardening, working around the house, etc. It is as tight as the day it was purchased. I have read about blade play in the Wal-Mart Natives, but this little sucker has developed absolutely none, through years of abuse. I wish my local Wal-Marts offered them.
