Does anyone use a camelbak hawg for a woodsbag?

I found the blackwater military version online for 56 bucks (digital camo)
...and ever since i saw an article with a review of it in American survival guide (self reliance journal) years ago I have been looking for a well priced one. So i was wondering what anyone knows about these newer models, like for starters what the difference between the blackwater and the newer one is. Is this a steal at 56 bucks or is the newer one that much of an upgrade?

I don't know about the blackwater one, but if you get a regular one from the store, they are almost $100, so it seems like a good price to me.

I just got one, and I LOVE it. Not really big enough for more than day hikes it seems, but then again, I still haven't ever filled it to capacity for any of my day hikes.

I have one and carry it everyday, work or woods. It is very well made and for a murse, just about perfect IMO. My only complaint is that it looks to military, for OpSec reasons I wish it was more civilianized. Chris

Chris, you may want to look into some of the Blackburn or Mirage bags. Much less tactical looking.

I've had a HAWG (regular version) for a year and a half, maybe two years. I love the thing and think it makes a great pack for dayhikes. The Molle attachment points on the military must make it a hauling monster.

I load the smaller pocket up with trail maps, trail guide, wife's smokes, bandana, maybe some cliff bars. Two 24 oz. water bottles fit in the webbing for wifey. Large pocket carries first aid kit, bulky binocs or camera, sandwiches, sometimes a hatchet. Two side pockets carry Inova X1 flashlight, one or two knives, firesteel. Compass goes in the Ipod pouch on top.

I haven't consolidated my kit enough for my liking yet, but plan to invest some time and money into making things smaller and get my bag in an always ready-to-go condition.

Without a dedicated hip belt (has more of a gut belt), this thing can get a bit heavy fully loaded, including the 100 oz. of water. The best thing is that this is the largest bag Camelbak recommends for bike riding, so it can do double duty.

I have the mil-spec version and it's a really well made peice of gear.

I use it on all my wood runs that aren't overnight and it's a champ.

I have a black water version in black and I love it. I replaced the blackwater patch with a Weyland-Yutani patch, added a canteen pouch, utility pouch and a few grimlocks and it is perfect for a few day pack.

I have one and I've used it a lot.

I don't really care for the Molle attachment system because I feel like once I start hanging stuff off of a pack then I should just switch to a bigger pack, but it's good for hanging a hatchet or something flat on.

My wife has used mine for weekend backpacking trips with the ultralight sleeping bag.

I felt the same way. But now that I use the attachments for a canteen and small essentials bags. It is nice to have some basic first aid and fire starting things easily accessible.

Also the molle winch attachment is custom and I will be selling a limited run for $700 each. Great for when you just can't walk a step farther.

I've used them for hanging a watch, photon light, headlamp and toilet paper. Things I might need to get at quick!;)

i have a military version of the camelbak hawg. great pack for day trips.

Ditto above posts they are great packs. It is the pack I use for most of my dragging stuff around with me duties be it a woods dayhike, trip into the city and just dragging EDC stuff along on the weekends.
