Does anyone use both their thumb and index finger in hole to open their Spyderco?

You've actually gotten cut doing that?? I can't even imagine how that is possible without dropping the knife. I believe you and I'm not trying to mess with you, I just can't understand what you're talking about. It is physically impossible for me to open a spyderco with my thumb AND index finger at the same time. I just tried. If you can do it then I guess whatever works is the way to go. My hats off to you, cause you've got way more dexterity than I do!

I think I confused you and myself.:confused::p
When I say that I use my thumb and index finger to open the blade, my index finger is only being used to sort of push open and lift the blade out of the handle a bit, and than I only use my thumb the rest of the way in a controlled opening.

Ahhhh...hahaha. Ok, ok. I was genuinely baffled!! I honestly tried it and was like "man, that guy must be super coordinated!" :D. I got ya now. Sounds like you've just got an extra strong detent on that one.

Here's what I do.

Lately I've been carrying my Techno sans clip loose in my left pocket and another larger knife in my right pocket. I've been learning how to use the Techno left handed and I've come up with a couple neat techniques. I use my thumb to open my right hand spydie and I use my middle finger to open my left pocket spydie, which is always the Techno. Giving it a firm flick outward breaks the detent and locks her up like a vault. Love that knife. But…left handed middle finger flick on non-presentation side of blade. Right hand thumb flick on presentation side..

When I open the knife with my thumb I don't rest the back of the handle in the middle of my palm but at the start of my fingers.

How do you even do this? It doesn't get much easier opening a knife than a thumb alongside a Spydie hole. Fast, slow, doesn't matter.

I use my thumb and index finger at the same time to push up the blade a little and than follow through with just my thumb. The reason I do this is because when the blade is set, it feels like it's sticking or like a magnet is holding the blade. I realize there are no magnets but that's what it feels like. Like I mentioned earlier, if I just try to use my thumb, the blade pops up uncontrollably and I've actually nicked myself a few times. Maybe it just needs to be broken in a little more I don't know.

What you are feeling is the detent that is designed to keep the knife closed. What I don't understand is how you nicked yourself when the knife opened, even if it "popped up uncontrollably". If you have opposable thumbs like the rest of us there is no part of your hand near the cutting edge of the blade when you use the thumb to open the blade. How, where did you get cut?

I've got a couple with extra strong detents that will do the same thing. Assisted openers opened with the thumb stud also.
My Lum large Chinese took a chunk out of my thumb a couple of days ago but I wasn't paying attention opening and the blade got a little ahead of my thumb speed. And it is one of my sharpest so it doesn't take much of a mistake to inflict some damage.

I understand what the OP is saying now. I've got a Rat 2 that's the same way. If you try and ease out the blade it can catch your thumb since it has a fairly strong detent. That knife was made to flick it seems.

I'll get the hang of it the more I use it. It's my first Spyderco and I couldn't be more happy with the knife overall and I have no intention of looking for any other knives at this time. Just a great knife for me.
