Just curious does anyone just sit and whittle away some time. Used to see men spend hours just cutting pieces of wood into mostly a toothpick.

Totally. Sadly, my current apt complex keeps their trees so well trimmed that I have to really hunt around for something big enough to actually whittle :(.

I like to sit on the front step in the evening and practice things like notches, tent stakes, triggers, etc.

My wife even recently admitted that she enjoys trying to featherstick (looks like I'm finally making progress :)).

I asked a bunch of younger guys I work with in their 20's and so and they never heard of it.

LHell, sitting around with the older men watching and learning about knives is what got me into knives in the first place. I spent many summers in the North Carolina mountains whittling away many? boring days as a kid. But I'm almost fifty and we only got one channel back then, lol.

I do, it always helps pass the time when camping or sitting in the deer stand on a slow day.

It's very therapeutic, especially with puukko at sauna porch, cooling down and taking beer in the summer time at the lake. :)

I love it when someone goes from "Oh My GOD! What are you going to do with THAT!" to "Wow, that's really cool. Show me how you did that!"

People fear the unknown.

I'm pretty sure that texting has replaced whittling and other pastimes.

I fit squarely in that demographic, just FYI.

But I've loved whittling since I was a kid, right after when I learned how to carve by whittling soap.

I still whittle. This year I have made several spoons, a bowl, an egg, a bear and some other stuff. Very calming and lets you use your knives.

I just recently won a giveaway here and the prize was a buck 373. Its the first traditional style knife Ive ever owned. Since then I have started whittling and now Im hooked. The knife hasnt left my pocket since it came in the mail.
I love the fact that every hike or walk in the woods is like a treasure hunt. I love looking for that perfect piece of wood. Something that speaks to me. Anyhoo, I love whittling.

I whittle all the time. Its a great way to pass the time and be creative. Sometimes you even end up with something cool when youre done. Im only 29 but ive been doing it as long as i can remember, but i guess im in the minority amongst my immediate peer group.

Just about every day of my life. Here in about a half hour I'll be out there doing my thing, very calming and relaxing. I always thought I had strong hands, I can definitely notice a difference since I took it up (whittling.) Been about four years.
