One piece Jack?

You are my whittlin' hero, I'm still workin' on a chain, got the caged ball down pretty good, just gotta work the kinks ;) outta my chain.

Yep, one block of basswood. Much simpler than the long loop I did a while back.

Whenever I have time to kill which is much more these days. Also when camping and sitting around the campfire with my young boys. They love making little ones out of big ones. We don't make anything in particular unless someone starts a shape then we all start making the same thing and compare as we progress.

Hello Whittlers,

I found this thread looking for suggestions for American made whittling knives. I wrote an article about Kids and Knives, and I got contacted by a mom who is looking for a whittling knife for her 10 year old daughter for Christmas. I started looking into it and decided to write an article about whittling knives for kids. I've tried to contact some well known whittlers with a little luck, but I would like more info.

So I have two questions:
1. What whittling knife would you recommend for a 10 year old girl, and
2. Any other suggestions or advice for a kid just starting out?

Just so you know, I plan to write this up and put it on my site, so if you want me to quote you or say something specific, just say so. Or you can message me if you want.

Hopefully there are more kids out there who want to whittle, but who just haven't had the chance.

Thanks,
Keith

A good whittling knife would be the Mora Craftline series of knives.

I used to do a lot of carving and whittling before I started making knives. Never got the chain down pat but I love ballin balls and ball in cages.

To keithhblade, check out littleshavers.com. They are all about carving and whittling. I found that a 1.5" blade was best for me to learn on and then moved to the larger carving knives.
You could also shoot me an email if you want to talk other knives I like best for carving.

CWL - thanks for the suggestions. I should hvae been more clear, but I think the mom is looking for more of a pocket knife, because she mentioned Case knives as a possibility.

Big Chris - thanks, I will be in touch shortly. I just found out my daughter caught lice from someone in her class, so my day has just gone from work to nothing but lice. Yay!

I'm no good at it, but I love doing it. Anything that involves using my knife is fun.

It's really relaxing to me.

I used to whittle like crazy when I was a kid. Now I do it camping, mostly toothpicks or something to poke dead animals with. :-)

Whittling to us country folk is just sitting with a soft piece of red cedar and making shavings. When you're actually making something that's carving!

This thread drove me to order some basswood blocks to try my hand at some carving. Those chains are too cool.

I have to agree Jill. I don't think I ever carved anything but a Turkey, lol. You carving people are amazing and God bless you, but I'm just a whittler. I started in Smokey Mountains as a kid and still make messes today, only difference is Grandma and Mom stopped complaining about the shavings, now my wife does!
