Does Blade Play Annoy You??

Apparently I'm not very hard on my folders because mine stay tight for years. I don't chop with them or torque them unnecessarily. I have fixed blades, hawks and machetes for heavy stuff. I have an orange Endura coming in the mail to replace my green FFG Endura which had a super irritating ''click'' and noticeable movement when I pressed down to cut. Spyderco said that it was within tolerance but sent me a new knife in a different colour as I requested. I am impressed with the quality of service from Spyderco and was treated respectfully over the phone also. Am I asking for the moon for a lower priced user not to have a bit of tolerance play ? Maybe, considering how many are pumped out constantly. Some will be a bit ''off''. But I would honestly, and was ready and willing, to have Spyderco or any other company just keep the knife if not replaced. I have zero use for a folding knife with vertical play.

The day my SOG tomcat 3 developed play (after a week of owning it) i put it back in the drawer and havent used it since. I will never buy another SOG.

Doesn't annoy me, ppast that, now it absolutely pisses me off!! With the tolerances on knives today, there shouldn't be any bladeplay. Now with auto's, especially DA OTF's, you may have to live with bladeplay as that seems to be present in all reports I've read about them.

HATE it. Only thing that hasn't gotten ONE BIT of play was my recon 1. to the Triad lock

Also wanted to say that with the newer CAM/CAD technologies, the tolerances I mentioned above are getting smaller/tighter than ever before. When you can pick up a $10.00 convience store knife, China made, and it have a perfectly centered blade, no bladeplay in any direction, and great fit/finish, you have to wonder about the more expensive knives you may have. A lot does depend on the maker of the knife, and how much "within spec's" they allow on their knives, and how tight the have their tolerances.

Jill, you make a good point about use/nonuse or light use. A hard use folder could very well end up with bladeplay, but it should be able to be adjusted out of it. Liner/framelocks can have more bend put in the locking liner if there is horizontal play, and the stop pin should be able to be rotated to take up any vertical play. Course the hardness of the parts should be that this can be done with success.

What is this thing being spoken of called "blade play?" From what I gather reading the posts it is when the blade has some vertical or lateral movement when being used or manually manipulated. Odd, I have never experienced this phenomenon. . . Wait, I have a Sebenza--excuse me for my inexperience and ignorance with "blade play." :)

One of my favorite things about the Sebenza. Most knives will develop blade play, so you have to tighten the pivot screw, but then that messes up the blade centering and ease of deployment, so you ease back the pivot a bit...blade play again. It's like trying to find the sweet spot with the temperature in the shower.

Sebenzas, on the other hand, are manufactured with such tight tolerances that they just don't generally develop any play and are always perfectly centered. You can completely loosen the pivot screw so that it is just free floating and still no play and perfectly centered. Now that's craftsmanship.

I've had one come back from the MFG after a 3 week wait with a letter telling me the vertical play is "within specs" :) That knife is gone now. Disclosed but gone :) At least they returned my return shipping money . . .

Yes it does. I batoned an entire single piece of firewood with my CS Recon 1 once. I think i ended up with a dozen small pieces. Blade was loose as all get out. I thought i ruined it. Got home & bought 2 sets of small torx driver bit. Tightened it up & now it is as good as new. I just wanted to see if i could baton with it.
