Does buying knives through the forums hurt dealers and the manufacturers?

Hurt them? Just look at the wait times for some knives. I watched a YouTube video knife review. The guy said he was able to buy the knife because he won a lottery. Not a lottery were he won enough money. A lottery to be allowed to be the one who could purchase it. If it wasn't for the aftermarket you could not get a Spyderco PM2. Even at that the prices are approaching black market status. With this level of demand. Suffering is not a term that can be associated with the supply side of this equation.

It's pretty basic economics. You just have to think about it for a few minutes. If someone finds out that they enjoy a product, they will want more of it. This creates a higher demand for the product, which is very beneficial for the producer.
