Does Case have any competition??

There is also a new company called Texas Cutlery. They have only been around for maybe a year at the longest. At this point, they are really only making trappers. However, they are very nice and the stag they use is generous, to say the least. You can buy them from teskeys.com

Is there any good American knife makers? That make nice, basic, affordable pocket knives?

Most of Bucks pocket knives with just a few exceptions are made in China. Ditto with much of Schrade, Gerber, Ka-bar and other historically reputable American knife makers. it's kind of sad.

I don't want to come across as some kind of hard nosed nationalist here as there are perfectly good knives coming out of China and if anyone has any recommendations of other (non-chinese/taiwanese/etc) affordable knife makers feel free to mention them too. (opinel and victorinox of course come to mind.) It can just be frustrating to go through reams of knife selections from parent companies that are American, German, and so forth and see 'made in china' over and over again.

Sorry to ramble but maybe you see where I'm going with this.

80% of Bucks are US made. Check out the ComfortCraft line of US paocket knives.

It was mentioned earlier that Queen knives are more expensive than Case knives. Clearly Queen lacks anything remotely approaching the variety of handle materials/patterns of Case, but I think they are price competitive with Case for comparable patterns/handle materials in most cases, and the D2 models have superior steel IMHO.
Do a search for "queen city cutlery" and look for crisnercutlery in the results. He has the best prices on Queen I have found.

I think the American-made knife companies have been named.
The fact that the bulk of Buck's knives are US-made has been made clear.

I will add that
  • I have a couple of Case knives that I have bought in the past 5 years. Each has been well made and came with sharp edges.
  • Buck 420HC holds an edge noticeably better than either Case Tru-Sharp or Case CV.
  • Queen has the dullest knives out of the box that I have ever seen and putting an edge on their D2 butter-knife edges is annoying.
  • My Canal Street has top of the line fit and finish.
  • Great Eastern makes beautiful pieces of cutlery, but I find their back springs are stronger than I prefer.

IMO Buck makes the best working stockman. Not as finished as a Case, but the blade layout is better and the steel holds an edge longer. American-made and not expensive. Try a 301.

Bear and Son has some of the best "traditional" designed pocketknives I've seen. Bought myself a carbon steel trapper last year and love it. Blades, bone scales, nickel bolsters.....all nicely finished at the South's only large scale cutlery. (Jacksonville, Alabama). They can hang in there with the best Case has to offer IMHO......and at much more affordable prices.
