Does consistency exist in Custom Knives...

If the knife fails due to some flaw in the steel or even due to design that was not compatible with the steel used, is it reasonable to expect the custom maker to replace it when he used the steel the customer requested?

If it was a flaw in the steel composition/structure wise then yes except if you supply it. As for how it performs - I am in that exact situation now as I have asked Phil Wilson to make me a blade out of CPM-15V which he has not worked with before. I know it will be more brittle than CPM-10V and if it proves to be so much so that it is nonfunctional then obviously that is a responsibility I will take. However there is a huge difference in that and asking a maker if a material/geometry is suitable and getting a "yes". The responsibility is no longer yours then.

Jerry thanks for the details. The numbers you quote would be beyond my current abilities to notice.
